Default More than 110,000 divorces take place each year in Spain, institute reports

Quote:
Madrid, Spain, Jul 22, 2010 / 06:02 pm (CNA).- The Institute for Family Policy issued a report this week showing that Spain has the highest rate of divorce in Europe, with more than 110,000 cases taking place each year.

The president of the institute, Eduardo Hertfelder, noted that the “unintended effects of the current fast-track divorce law are becoming evident and clear,” making Spain the country “with the highest rate of divorce in the last 10 years out of all the countries that make up the European Union.”

Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it.

That said, this is incredibly sad. I wonder how many divorces occur per year in the United States?

There was 957,200 divorces in the US in 2000, about 50% of US marriages end in divorce.

The US has the worst rate of divorce in the world.

El Instituto de Política Familiar is a lobbying organization and I think they misled the reporter.

Spain possibly has the highest increase in the rate over the last ten years because it started from a very low base, but the divorce rate is still one of the lowest in Europe.

The UK had a divorce rate of 136,026 in 2008 and the UK had the highest divorce rate in Europe then, but it was declining from a high of over 143,955. It is quite conceivable that divorce in other countries has dropped below Spain for the simple reason that in a lot of countries that formerly had high divorce rates people just don't get married at all now so Spain with that number of divorces could very well be the worst for divorce in Europe now, there is certainly not much difference anymore.

Either way Spain's divorce rate is now up there with the worst countries in Europe which is a sad sign of the moral decay that is damaging society in that country. 36,072 divorces in 1998 and increasing to 110,036 in 2008 is a huge change in just 10 years and will have a detrimental effect Spanish society for generations to come.
