Archbishop Desmond Tutu says it is time for an African pope
Paula Zahn interviews Archbishop Desmond Tutu this evening on CNN. Tutu says that there was a time for an Italian pope and that now is a different time. Now is a time for a pope from the Third World, particularly from Africa.
Thoughts?

it would have a significant impact, i think, if the new Pope would come from the third world.
but as always, God's will be done.

My thought is "What is an Anglican bishop doing trying to tell the Catholic Church what it needs?" (regardless of whether or not I agree with him).

There are many terrific priests and bishops from Africa. Cardinal Arinze is fantastic. If it is a true man of God, I'm all for it.

Do you think we should write him and ask him when he intends to convert? LOL. What do you think are his intentions, mtr?

My thoughts exactly. Especially one who's teachings are out of synch with what the Church teaches.

Re: Archbishop Desmond Tutu says it is time for an African pope
Mr. Tutu should take a long look at the sorry state of his ecclesial communion before he gives out advice to the Catholic Church.

It seems that we Catholics are being deluged by 'wish lists' from non-Catholics.
Do you feel that these 'wish lists' are teaching moments? Opportunities for evangelism? Cries for help? Lack of courtesy? Chutzpah? Or just self-advertising?

I don't have a problem with the next Pope being Catholic. But I DO have a problem that an archbishop from another religion telling us what we should do.

Re: Archbishop Desmond Tutu says it is time for an African pope
I believe Tutu is terrified of the idea of a Black African Pope and is hoping that his public statements as an Anglican clergyman in support of the idea will turn the electing Cardinals away from such action.

Actually, I was going to say the same thing. There's probably an element of each of these in the comments from non-Catholics. I can't say what Tutu had in mind, perhaps he thought the Catholic Church was racist, I dunno. I can't imagine an African pope would be good for Anglicanism there. Fact is, though, it is not up to Bishop Tutu to tell us what we need, that's the Holy Spirit's job.
