Conversion for President Bush
Did anyone else notice what the President said after landing in Texas today after the funeral of the Holy Father? He said the funeral affected him more than he thought it would. He said that he had times of doubting his faith but does not doubt the fact of Christ. (all paraphrasing - does anyone have exact quotes?)
I got a little chill wondering if this death of our sweet Papa JP II would lead (one day) to a conversion to Catholic Christianity for the Bush's!
Also, I heard that Jeb Bush is Catholic. True? If so , how did that conversion happen? Anyone know?

Re: Conversion for President Bush
He said he doubts his faith but not his fatih in Christ. Hmm if that is the correct quote me thinks his realtionship with the Methodist church is in doubt. I think there is some room for the Holy Spirit to do its work. While imagining Jeb Bush doing some cathechism thumping to convert brother George may be amusing the final conversion is by the Holy Spirit.
I remeber George Bush saying to his staff afterh meeting JP2.
"This is a Holy Man." THe Holy Spirit must be telling him something.

I watched the funeral on TV. It was beautiful. Jeb Bush is Catholic, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. I'm not sure how his conversion happened, but I think his parents are Episcopalian and I know the president and first lady are Methodists.
God Bless!

Jeb Bush wife is catholic. You can bet the house she played a huge role in converting. But that being said you don't have to convert just because you marry a catholic. So taking that step still is a major one.

Re: Conversion for President Bush
I would think that somewhere along the way and back, Jeb and the President talked about things, including Catholicism. I would think Jeb might have shared some things with him, and the President witnessed for himself "the faith of millions".

Yes, Jeb Bush is a Catholic. I have hope that maybe our president might become one also.

Re: Conversion for President Bush
Would have been nice if he converted before the race against Kerry ...
George "True Catholic" Bush
VS
John "Make-believe Catholic" Kerry

Re: Conversion for President Bush
It would be better if he (Bush) converted without implications that his conversion has anything to do with politics.
It would be nice to do this on his own terms away from the public spectacle that comes with the office of the Presidency.
I would like to pick up the paper one morning and read the former President Bush had converted to the catholic church.
A Nice footnote to his lifestory that has nothing to do with his politics of Presidency. Oh well at least the wheels in his head are rolling towards a favorable view of catholcism.

I believe the interview actually took place onboard the plane

I found the full unedited text of the interview! (the religious parts are scattered throughout ...)
http://www.allamericanpatriots.com/m...ryid-9024.html
Here's one excerpt from it:
"By the way, I think when you discuss religion -- on doubt --there is no doubt in my mind there is a living God. And no doubt in my mind that the Lord, Christ, was sent by the Almighty. No doubt in my mind about that. When I'm talking about doubts, I'm talking about the doubts that an individual struggles with in his or her life. That's important for you to make sure you get that part of the dialogue correct, if you don't mind."
Here's another that sounds kinda Catholic since he compares the Pope to a "rock":
"And he had a sparkle, he really wanted to show us this beautiful setting. I would define Pope John Paul II as a clear thinker who was like a rock. And tides of moral relativism kind of washed around him, but he stood strong as a rock."
He even speaks of "sparkle" there which I guess MIGHT be an allusion to a prophecy by St Faustina (probably not but you can hope!)

Maybe we should send him a Catechism of the Catholic Church. I kind of hope that our Church leaders would give him something like that.

Re: Conversion for President Bush
I would like that he will convert, but if it can be, later of the presidency, I would. He is a good president, it´s a pity in my country where we have an atheist Zapatero. What a pity!

Re: Conversion for President Bush
Jeb Bush is indeed Catholic. His wife, Columba, is Mexican. They met when Jeb was living in Mexico studying the Spanish language. Jeb's son, George P. Bush, looks like a Latino telenovela star and has a bright future in politics if he so chooses.
Dubya has had a conversion of sorts already, turning away from alcohol and turning toward God. He may one day become Catholic.

Re: Conversion for President Bush
I think I've posted here before about hearing that Jeb's first response to the tsunami was to say the rosary, so I don't think his conversion was the automatic one some people make when they marry. Also, I know I'v eposted about Bush's relationship with George Rutler of EWTN among other things. A while back he made Rutler an honorary Texan for some reason, and it was at Rutler's Manhattan parish church in Manhattan that Bush and many Republicans came for a prayer service during the convention, a prayer service that Bush requested Rutler to conduct.

Re: Conversion for President Bush
I would pray for the President's conversion to Catholicism. Then perhaps we will witness the canonization of the first US President.
I for one would advocate for President Bush's canonization even if he NEVER becomes Catholic simply because of all the good he has done.

Respectfully, I know President George W. Bush is a good man, but a Saint he is not. Canonization is not like electing someone to the Baseball Hall of Fame, so let us not cheapen the memory of true Saints by playing simple word games.
Again, I must apologize for sounding harsh to the my fellow CA Member. There are many non-Catholics on this site and let us not give them the false impression that Canonization is anything like awarding a honoring doctorate.
I am a very big fan of the President and I would love to see him come home to the Full Faith. I understand that you may be excited by the thought the someone that you deeply admire might join the Church, but let us not get carried away.

I do not think it in any way "cheapens the memory of the saints" by stating that the President should be canonized. I don't appreciate that kind of slam.
I think you should appreciate the good that Bush has done to bring peace into the world and to promote life.
