Default 'M' on JPII's casket?

What does the 'M' mean on JPII's casket? Does it represent the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross?

Exactly. Wasn't it beautiful and simple? I loved the way the right arm of the cross extended out over the "M", as if protecting her as she knelt there. So stunning.

It also, if I'm not mistaken, appears on his crest.

Yes, you are correct. Here is a photo I took from the top of St. Peter's in November 2001 that shows the crest in the form of a hedge.
