There's nothing to prevent his election as a matter of Canon Law. However, I doubt it is probable, becuase of the Pope's role as bishop of Rome, a Latin Diocese and the small minoritiy of Eastern Catholic Churches. But one never knows what the Holy Spirit will inspire the Cardinals to do.

I am certain someone here wrote that one of the early Popes was Eastern Rite, but I can not recall who or what post

If an Eastern Rite Patriarch is elected to the papcy it would probably hinder ties with the Eastern Orthdox, especially the Russian Orthodox.

I am curious if anyone believes that there is a chance that the Eastern Orthodox will rejoin the Catholic Church. I haven't read up much about the current state of the disagreements between the two, however, from what I have read it seems like disagreements are still great.
