Default Is there a certain size an altar must be?

I was curious as to whether there is a certain size an altar must be? Most of the altars in the churches I've been in are usually about the size of a small table or a butcher block style of table. They really don't resemble an altar at all. At least not like the altars I've seen in the masses on EWTN and in Rome.

Is there a certain size for an altar or is an altar suppose to resemble a little table?

In Christ,
Scarlet

This link is no longer valid. The document can be purchased from the USCCB or is available in PDF format from http://www.catholic-doc.org/br/files/g-stones.pdf
