i read today the papal apartment of Pope John Paul II was sealed today. what is the history of this? do they physically barrier the quarters? Just wondering.
I imagine that they place some sort of ceremonial type of tape (or other practical sealer) on the doors. Probably not much different than sealing the Holy Doors at the basilicas.
I understand that it grew out of a tradition of over-zealous souveneir hunters, probably spurred on by the relic trade if the Pope was particularly saintly.
The new Pope would find his apartments devoid of furnishings for example!
