Why not Pope Peter?

Considering the fact that each and every pope is a successor to St. Peter the first pope, why do none of the elected popes use the name that seems to be so appropriate?

Is it strictly taboo or is it actually forbidden? Does anyone know?

Maybe because using the name "Peter" would be incredibly presumptuous?

Yea, I thought of that too but they are already claiming by virtue of the office to be Peter's successor, the Rock....so to me using the name Peter is only appropriate. Im sure it is out of respect but on the other hand I always thought that newly elected popes took the name of a past pope "out of respect" for that person!!

I am wondering if there is some other reason that the name isn't used.

I've heard the reason is purley out of Respect for St. Peter.
