Default CATHOLIC cardinals have destroyed the late Pope John Paul II's ring and seal

CATHOLIC cardinals have destroyed the late Pope John Paul II's ring and seal in a symbolic end to his authority before secluding themselves from the world to elect his successor.

What will transpire in the next few days and weeks is truely magnificent. I hope everyone is sharing the experience with their children.

Just today? I thought these items were supposed to be destroyed immediately after the pope was declared dead?

I believe that the symbols are to be destroyed in the presence of the other cardinals. That is probably why they waited. Let everybody get there.

Chicago is correct about the destruction being performed in the presence of the other cardinals.

During the interregnum, the College of Cardinals "assumes" the duties of the Papacy but through "General Congreations" under the leadership of the Dean (Cardinal Ratzinger) and through the "Particular Congregation" headed by the Camarlengo and assisted by one Cardinal drawn from each of the 3 Orders in the College.

The Particular Congregation gets direction from the General Congregation and going back to the previous 11 General Congregations, it appears that there is no definitive instruction from the General Congregation to the Particular Congregation, or to the Camarlengo, for the destruction of the "Fisherman's Ring" and/or the Papal seal.

It could be that the General Congregation then postponed the destruction, which the Carmarlengo followed, and finally destroyed the "Fisherman's Ring" and/or the Papal Seal during the 12th (and the last) General Congregation of the Cardinals last Saturday, April 16th, in time for the commencement of the Conclave proper this Monday, the 18th.
