Default Bill Maher's Monologue Attacking The Pope

Every once in a while we stumble across Bill Maher's show on HBO. I don't believe we have ever sat through one of his show from top to bottom, but only watched snippets of it before moving on, like if there is something interesting being debated, and only if it isn't something that is a slam on the Church or our moral stance. We caught the opening monologue last week, and couldn't even watch the whole of it, it upset and angered us so. The Catholic League pretty well summed it up (and cleaned it up):

www.catholicleague.org/05press_releases/quarter%202/050414_maher.htm

Why is it that so many of these Hollywood-intellectual types feel that anything Catholic or dealing with the Pope or the Church is fair game for ridicule or that anyone who follows an organized religion, religious leader, particularly the Pope and Catholicism, are unintelligent fools?

These same people would be horrified to make racist slurs or comments or to slam feminists, etc., but anyone who ascribes to a religion, or the Catholic Church and its leaders in particular, are still fair game. I guess we aren't Politically Correct quite yet as a Church.

For the 5th time in these forums, I will repeat myself. Bill Meher is a self-aggrandizing, mindless, puppet of the Hollywood Intelligencia and a moron. Please disregard every vestige of air that escapes his lips.

HBO and other media continue to endorse this garbage. Hard to ignore it when it's allowed to proliferate in the media.

There's always hitting the OFF button, the channel up, the channel down, or the mute button.

Read my commentary. We do hit the channel or off button and do not need to be told to do that, and we did. The point I am trying to make is one that we are all aware of: It's politically incorrect to bash races, Jewish people, etc., but anything anti-Catholic is ok, it's ok to poke fun at the Church, it's ok to poke fun at Christianity in general. Atheism is the "new religion" of so many so-called intellectuals. They spout of being tolerant, yet are so intolerant in their commentary of anyone who don't espouse their dogma, if it can be called that.

I agree. Welcome to the persecuted church.

Altho a lot of this Church bashing from Hollywood could be heard on the street, the major motive of the entertainment establishment is profit and power. If the Church goes away, they can sell any trash after they have bent our morals to what they will. These are the same people who try to say that "Big Corporations" run our country, when it is actually them who want a cultural hegemony that will line their pockets. What hypocrisy.

Actually, I think you are being altogether too kind. Of course, it is impossible to say what I think of him, because my grandmother would roll over in her grave if I used that kind of language....

Unhappy Re: Bill Maher's Monologue Attacking The Pope

I am not surprised with what Bill Maher says regarding the Catholic Faith, nor am I suprised with the response or lack of it from HBO. I am also not suprised with the Catholic man in the street's opinion when they say nothing. Yes, not enough of us will step up to the plate and defend this beautiful gift of faith. We will pay for it and are paying for it in many ways.

Today alone I faced three different people who condemned the Church for the harm the priest did to children, harm they do by not allowing birth control methods and abortion and allow women to be priest!

While I obviously do not agree with some things Maher said (Jesus' birth pagan) I do wonder just how many American Catholics actually abide by all of the Church's teachings. Such as birth control, and views on homosexuality and abortion. Also, I do agree that it was a bit silly to wait 24 hours. Was it right to for Donohue to call Maher and Huffington severely retarded? I gotta question this move.
