Default Papal coat of arms... That was fast.

Everyone notice how quickly they had a banner containing Benedict XVI's papal coat of arms? I really doubt the designed and sewed that up in the 40 minutes between the election and his presentation.

So... do all cardinals have a coat of arms sewn up for them when they enter the conclave, "just in case"? Did Ratzinger "just know" he was gonna be elected, so had one prepared already? I'm kinda confused...

It was JPII's. I heard Benedict is keeping it as a way of showing continuity.

I didn't ever really notice JPII's coat of arms... They didn't mention that it was JPII's crest on catholicity....

I actually didn't see it myself. Did it look like this:

That was most definitely JPII's Coat of Arms.

JPII's coat of arms is at

http://flagspot.net/flags/va_jp2.html#coa

This doesn't jive with the description on Catholicity. Any one know any thing else? Catholicity said there was a Bear on Pope Benedict XVI.

There wasn't. He used JPII's banner

I'm not saying that there was a bear on the banner used when announcing him, I'm saying there was a bear on his real coat of arms... Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, some people were astonished that Pope Benedict XVI used Pope John Paul II's coat of arms, but then some speculated it's temporary while they make his. Or as some say, he might keep John Paul's as a show of continuity.

Unhappy Re: Papal coat of arms... That was fast.

I have tried to upload Ratzingers Coat of Arms and I just do not have the Computer savy to do it on this site.
Nothing works.
I have Ratzingers coat of arms as Cardinal, but have no way of knowing how to read it.
If somone can get it and upload it here, maybe this forum has somoene that can interpret it.

Maybe someone could volunteer to take it from me by email if that person knows how to upload pictures here???

Here's the banner from the Vatican web site... is that it?

It appears to simply be the background to JPII's coat of arms.

There's a good story behind that Bear. It relates to a Saint whose name I can't remember who tamed a Bear on his way to Rome after the Bear killed his horse. He then made the Bear carry his pack.

There was some line that the Holy Father (will take me a while to not instantly get a vision of JPII in my head with that title) drew relating himself to the Bear.

Either that, or Sally Robb made it up.

Since I don't see a Bear, then either that is not Benedict XVI's coat of arms or somebody lied about the Bear...

The above coat of arms I posted is the coat of arms for the Holy See and Vatican City, according to the Vatican's web site.

## Cardinals have their own coats of arms, or should, or can, just like anyone else.

I think that it is usual to impale one's own, familial, coat of arms, with that of one's diocese; but the laws of heraldry vary a bit from country to country.

Try:

http://www.heraldica.org/topics/pope.htm

http://flagspot.net/flags/va).html

Monsignor Bruno Heim's book on Papal heraldry is the standard work in English. ##
