Default First German Pope?

I looked at a list of Popes going all the way back to St. Peter... it didn't seem to list any Pope ever from Germany. Is this correct?

My history may be faulty. Perhaps Germany was not in existence as a separate nation at the time the last 'German' pope lived. But yes I believe there was a 'German' pope before.

Gregory V was the first German pope. There were others in the 11th century I believe.

See: CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pope Gregory V
