Re: Surprise! New Pope takes a walk through Rome
You know, I think JPII was a great pope, but he was pope nearly my whole life, and, I don't know how to word this properly. But it was almost a given he was there and I didn't think much about it. I recently converted, and still the pope was there, but I never understood the importance of the office of pope. When JPII died, I did feel a lot of sadness. Then came all the wonderful stories about him, and it was kind of a "you don't know what you've lost til it's gone " moment for me.
Since I just converted this year, and this pope was elected weeks later, I feel like we're on this journey together. I feel an odd connection to him, and really affection, although before a few weeks ago I knew nothing about him.
I have so much faith that he will guide the church the way it needs, and he will re-enforce my faith in Jesus every step of the way.
Seeing those pictures just bring on so many tears of happiness.

Re: Surprise! New Pope takes a walk through Rome
I have some family in Rome and as you can imagine, the past several weeks have been hard for them. They wanted so badly to pay their last respects to John Paul, but get this - they couldn't even get across town to St. Peter's! I called one of them right after Benedict came out after the election, & she said that she was so happy for him because he was such a good friend of John Paul. Of course, the whole city was celebrating - I could hear all the bells ringing in the background as we were talking. It would have been a great time to be there.

Interesting if it was a two man race between Cardinal Martini and Cardinal Ratzinger. The two most polar opposite Cardinals. Martini is a liberal but is well respected by everyone. He has Parkinson's Disease.

Re: Surprise! New Pope takes a walk through Rome
Jesus loves us. We've never seen Him. We've only read about Him. We have never even seen a picture of Him. He knows that; so he gives us someone representing Him whom we can love and actually see and feel that love returned as human affection.
I think the experts call it transference.

The papacy suits him well. He will be full of surprises. I pray that he has more happy and healthy years ahead of him.

I have experienced the same feeling of connection and affection. I converted just last year.

I meant to post a whole bunch more fotos of Pope Benny's life, but I accidentally posted them on another thread. Here is the link:

I wonder how they are handling security for this? Rome is a big city with more than a few unbalanced people who might hate the Church.

It's pretty obvious that our Papa isn't worried--he trusts in God's protection. I have a feeling he's gonna be one of those people who just drive Secret Servicemen insane.
