Default Pope Predicts Short Reign

Article

I guess we better treasure him, then. He won't be around for long.

I wondered about that because he does not look well...the dark circles around the eyes..too bad because he's just the Pope we need right now.

The Lord will provide. He gives us the Pope we need, for as long as we need him. Be not afraid. Be it 20 years, or 20 months, Pope Benedict was placed in office by the Holy Spirit with a mission God wants from him.

Part of the reason he looks a little unwell is that he caught a cold a few days ago:

On the other hand, though, I will be especially praying for his health and well being in my Rosary every day. Perhaps Our Lord will surprise us all and grant our Holy Father many years!

Well, nobody was thinking he's gonna go 26 years(although anything is possible). He'll take care of the Church for however long he's here. The heterodox and the media are all just hoping he won't last long and then a heterodox pope will be elected. They're just going to be disappointed again.

As Saint Paul speaks of a runner running a race, let's pray for a good kick from Benedict in his leg of the relay. When he's done, he'll be cheering us on. So please God, give our humble little Papa the grace to guide us.

Yes it seems hard to understand the concept that the Pope is Catholic.

Pope Benedict XVI is a blessing to all of us. I swear my face is tired from all of the smiling!

I don't think it's rocket science to realize that the likelihood of a long reign goes down substantially when one begins it at age 78. But this is all about trust. If he only has a 2-year reign, then God intended him to have a 2-year reign while preparing another Holy Father for us. If he has a 15 year reign, then eveyrone will be surprised except for God, who planned it that way.

The English commentator on EWTN's broadcast of his first mass made a good point: the poor man probably hasn't gotten much sleep the past few days! I would imagine that being elected the Supreme Pontiff would keep anyone awake at night for a while.

Hey, you never know. Short might mean "25 years, 11 months" ... (Which would be a-ok with me! This is my first transition from one Pope to a new one since becoming Catholic. I need time to recover.)

I had read this information before but thought there was something else based on the title of the thread. Is there anything to substantiate the statement in the first line of the article that Pope Benedict XVI himself predicted a short reign?

In the re-broadcast EWTN interview from about a year and a half ago, then Cardinal Ratzinger had said that he had considered retiring in 1991, 1996, and again in 2001. The only reason I recall him giving was that he'd like to spend more time to write books. He might have mentioned something about his age, but I definitely don't recall him bring up any health issues. He said he had looked at how Pope John Paul II suffered and continued to work for the flock and that he just couldn't quit in light of that. I hope we'll have him for a good long while!

The articles coming from LaRepubblica are much more detailed. Yesterday some interview of the cardinals revealed the reason given by Pope Benedict for choosing his name:

1) Because Pope Benedict XV had been a peace-maker pope;
2) Because Pope Benedict I had started and spread monasticism across Europe when Europe was beset by troubles.
3) Because he expected his pontificate to be short.
