Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Well, I am at least a quarter German. I think everybody ought to be proud of the Holy Father whether they are German or not. I'd love to have a big beer hall festival dedicated to the Pope!

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Well, I am german, and can very well relate to the bragging.
I was born and grew up there and I do remember our pope making the news a lot..
I can not describe my feelings when his name was announced
Thanks be to GOD

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Psalm45:9 You qualify for the exclusive "Two Popes in a Row Club"
Mary1973 Thank you for answering the question I had in my mind last night as I watched Journey Home. I couldn't figure out what that border was on Marcus' collar. I wonder if that style will catch on?
David Oatney Just as one drop of the precious blood is 100% Christ....... your 1/4 German heritage gives you 100% German bragging rights. You can celebrate with 1/4 stein of the Papa's brew!
Jw10631 Thank you for letting us know where a German town in Michigan is. It would be great if we could find out where all the German towns are in the USA that might have German festivals. My brother went to an Octoberfest.....in November.... in a delightful German town close to San Antonio, Texas. Everyone was in costume. He wants to go back next November. Maybe I'll meet him there.
Ann-Elisabeth You sound like someone we can use as a reference when we have questions about Germany or our beautiful Papa. How do you say, "I love you Papa" in German?

"Papa, ich hab' dich lieb" or "Papa, ich liebe dich" ( means the same thing.)
I still think that it sounds better in english though..

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
4HisChurch
Rev Joseph Fessio, the founder of Ignatius Press (the exclusive publisher for the pope) was quoted in yesterday's paper. He was comparing the state of American Catholicism to his experience tasting beer. He said "I drank beer for the first time in Germany, at age 30. When I drank U.S. beer, I thought this shouldn't be called by the same name. It's the same for U.S. flavored Catholicism."
So, 4HisChurch, maybe German beer is worth trying......in moderation, ofcourse. I don't like beer either but I might make an extra effort to get some German beer just to toast our new pope.
Ann-Elisabeth
Thank you for the translation.

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Thats all we need. A bunch of Square-Head Germans in the spot light!!
All that sausage and beer breath in the Vatican!!! LOL
After a million years, the Germans actually produce a great Catholic mind, and he becomes Pope. God save us from the rest of the Germans! LOL
Why cant we get an Irish Pope? Think about it. He would be hilarious. Funny and fun-loving.
We had all those I-Talians, then a Polish Pope, and now a Darn German. We need an Irish man next.
LOL
Hope you all know I am Kidding.
My parents were German and I am Italian. I was adopted.
Thank God I am Italian!!! LOL

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
I am 1/2 German myself. Dad is 100%. Mom is 1/2 Dutch for sure and 1/2 Irish, we think. Grew up with the last name Wiesen. It was mispronounced more often than not. Even at my wedding reception! Anyway, I've never been more proud to be German than since we got our new Holy Father! Long live Benedict XVI!!

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Ally -
Do I qualify for the "Two Popes-In-A-Row Club"? My hubby is Polish, so he got to brag for 25 years. I am half German (my mom was pure German), so now it's MY turn!
I really got a laugh from the "German Shepherd"! However, I think we'd better keep that one under wraps...for just this site, perhaps. I'd hate to see anyone with animosity towards our beloved Holy Father use that term in a derogatory way. BUT...I intend to use it with family! It's great!
Btw, my mom's name was Rauch...as in "Rauchen Verboten", which you may see on signs in war movies. It means "Smoking Forbidden" (and "Rauch" means "smoke")! It was always amusing to see how people would pronounce that name. It usually came out something like "roach" (to my grandmother's disdain!), but in German, it sounds more like you're clearing your throat! Ha,ha! Anyway...my hubby's name is much easier to deal with...since his family shortened it, anyway. It used to be Maksimowski, and they shortened it because, when he was a kid, the other kids would tease him and call him "Mickey Mouseki"!
LET'S ALL LIFT A GLASS OF LIEBFRAUMILCH TO OUR NEW HOLY FATHER!!

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
K C Sorry. The two popes in a row club is only for "individuals" with both German and Polish heritage. If you have children....they would qualify. I am so happy being a member of the newly-formed bragging German-American club so unless the next pope is Irish I will be satisfied with this status. You don't get the two flags but here's one stein for you....

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
Everyone should try and remember that JPII and Our new great Pope both had hilarious senses of humor.
Pope Benedict would laugh out loud at being a German Shepard. I bet he already knows this and laughed about it.
I was surprised upon hearing that they both told each other jokes all the time, even in public.
So, like Fr. Benedict Grochel said..........In life you either laugh or cry, but you live longer if you laugh.
I choose to laugh.
Calling the Pope "Our German Shepard" is in my opinion a term of endearment.
What the Liberal Press and Ted Turner will be calling him in the future will make this all seem pale in comparison.

My God, what a messy mix. LOL
I am worse than you are!
My dad was pure Italian. Mom was Scottish.
I am both cheap and greasy. LOL
My adoptive parents: Father Pure German and Mother Dutch/Irish.
So, I am a much nastier mess than you are. LOL
I need much more help assimilating into American Society.
LOL
My melting pot has a thick layer of grease on the top.
LOL

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
PiusX I love hearing that the two papas had great senses of humor. So do Mother Angelica and her right hand guy Deacon Bill. Anyone who missed the EWTN Live last night absolutely MUST see the re-run. Deacon Bill told the miraculous story of how EWTN was founded and it was filled with miracles. So touching! He even labeled himself a German when he described being stubborn about something. He said the German in me made me.......(I don't remember the exact quote) So, Deacon Bill I would like to welcome you and the greasy German PiusX to the German-American bragging club. PiusX, you will need a bratwurst (grease) to go with your stein. Deacon Bill just gets the stein.

Okay for an American, maybe, but a German would not have said, "Ein Bier, bitte." He would have said, "Ein helles," or "Ein dunkles." (A light [beer] or a dark [beer]) With the wide variety of beer available there, Germans specify what they want.

Re: Closet German-Americans let's brag!
On the contrary, it depends on where in Germany. Usually there is only one beer available, or a clear local favorite that's assumed. If you want something in particular, you ask for it specifically. Unlike the U.S. where you may have up to 90 beers on tap. Hence, the ad slogan for Bitburger Pils: "Bitte, ein Bit!".
