Default How does one get a job at the Vatican?

You can't tell me everyone who works there is clergy or religious... They must have janitors, secretaries, MIS guys to run the website, etc. I'd clean the Pope's toilet if it meant I could live and work in or near the Vatican! How do you get a job there?

Do you have to already work for a Bishop before he becomes a Cardinal, and then if he gets appointed to a position in the Vatican, he brings his staff with him?

The Vatican website has a page for their Labor office. It's in Italian. I translated some of the documents with Google and it appears to be more like the equivalent of OSHA than the equivalent of a personnel office.

Any insights? I suppose you would also need to know Italian?

I would LOVE to work at the Vatican!! Although, I don't know Italian

Talk about the best job in the world no matter what I was doing...being a janitor or assistant for something.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the service positions have been handed down through families over the centuries. If you're really serious about getting a job there, try calling the embassy.

I would work manual labor if that meant I could live and work close to The Holy Father...heck, there isn't a job I wouldn't do to work in the Vatican. I have my resume available upon request

Dum: Are you married? If not, have you ever considered the priesthood? You could possibly study in Rome.

What an experience that would be!

I bet it would've been quite an experience to go on a pilgrimage with the Polish for Pope John Paul II's funeral. I would like to go on a pilgrimage to the Vatican someday.

That is definitely not a bad idea! Thanks!

Someone on another forum suggested I join a convent. I don't think my husband would appreciate that, LOL!

No...Im not married and I definitely have thought about the priesthood...the only problem is that I still owe about 20K in student loans and I can't enter seminary with any debt..so if I can hurry and pay that off, then I will definitely consider that.

anyone working for the Church in any capacity in the Vatican or Rome has to know Italian. That is true for seminarians and others studying there as well.

send your resume with references from several people including your priest to your chancery, and ask that they be forwarded to Rome.

I think you need to know Latin too. Maybe you can work in the archives if you know latin and ancient greek. Wow that would be amazing.

Get a plane ticket to Rome, get an apartment near the Vatican, and start knocking on doors.

yes you would
my guess is a lot of work is done by religious or priests, and even the labor jobs by locals. I bet the background check is rigorous and don't know what the work visa situation is in Italy (which I believe governs the Vatican in those matters).
