Can the authors of "The Rock" newsletter please please do a piece on Fort Mose in Saint Augustine Florida, where American slaves were freed long before the protestants and Abraham Lincoln...

What many do not realize, however, is that the Old City played a small, but significant role in the lives of escaped slaves well before Lincoln signed and read the Emancipation Proclamation, the document which gave freedom to all slaves living in the United States. Prior to the Revolution the Spanish colony of St Augustine established the first free black settlement in 1738. Read on to find out more about this historic and significant place, and plan to visit Fort Mose Florida, one of the most interesting St Augustine Florida Attractions.

Saint Augustine was mentioned in

Volume 20, Number 4
April 2009
But I think one very important detail mentioned above was inadvertently left out of that article.

I personally met a tour guide whose great grandfather had been set free from his slavery in Georgia, by escaping to Saint Augustine and converting to Catholicism and becoming a citizen of Spain at the same time!
