I was supposed to serve at Mass tomorrow night. Sooooo tired. I had to call a replacement. I just switched to days today and the weather has me working long hours. I promise I will jump back into this thread next week. I am glad benedictgal had a great conference. Until next time, "Peace is flowing like a ri-i-ver, flowing out for you and meeee...."

God bless you all.

I just realized how it's going to feel weird celebrating Lent in April this year when it will feel like it should be Easter. That puts Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 26, 2011 this year. It will be hot during the procession!

Here is what I would have chosen for the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time:

Mass setting: A Community Mass: (the late Richard Proulx)

Entrance Processional: Word of God, Come Down on Earth
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: Shepherd of Souls
Recessional: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service

NB: While at the Society for Catholic Liturgy Conference in Houston, it was reiterated that we are required to use Mass settings that match the official texts word-for-word. Paraphrasing is not allowed.

In Laredo, that would put us at about 100 degrees, easily.

I was thinking of that when I posted that! I think you guys can handle the hot weather more easily than us, though.

I need advice about music during Lent and Good Friday. Yesterday I introduced 2 pieces of music to our seasonal choir, "God Weeps" to be sung at a penitential service and "Surrexit Christus" by Pegolesi to be sung on Easter, and a reminder that "The Seven Last Words of Christ" should be sung on Good Friday again as we have the previous 2 years..

One of our 3 musicians, she the keystone of our music liturgy, whom I respect and love, attended our first choir practice of this season at my invitation. She has not sung with our 10-12 voice choir, but she sings and plays for mass every other Sunday, Easter Vigil, etc., and is my dear friend.

Last year she and I wanted to begin mass during Lent differently from usual here. We had a silent processional, the antiphon being chanted at the rear of the church, and the ministers, servers, etc. processing silently afterwards. We also sing a penitential litany/Kyrie during this season. The atmosphere is so reverent, and different from the other seasons.

I was dismayed yesterday to hear her not wanting any special music during Good Friday service. She said therewere so many things to do [within the mass] that there shouldn't be extra music. Further, she said we should have less music during Lent.

"Sing to the Lord", section 114 speaks to musical instrument "restraint". I take this to mean, no trumpets, no exuberant music, more solumn music in general, "toning" music down, etc. I don't read this area 110 - 118 as meaing no choral pieces. She doesn't want preludes, postludes either

How can I mediate this situation? Our priest is "hands off", leaving the music to us. This dear woman is my friend, I always defer to her decision. But this year, she seems to have set new barriers for our choir and I am at a loss.

I hesitate to post this. But I read this board everyday and the guidance given has certainly led me down a more proper path, muscially speaking!

Thank you for reading. If I am in error or off-base, please redirect me. I look forward to any help you may offer.

Actually, Musicam Sacram states this:

Quote:
66. The playing of these same instruments as solos is not permitted in Advent, Lent, during the Sacred Triduum and in the Offices and Masses of the Dead.
According to the GIRM:

Quote:
In Lent the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only to support the singing. Exceptions are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts.
Thus, she has a very valid point. Whenever there is doubt, it is always best to consult with the authoritative documents of the Church, such as Musicam Sacram and those having the recognitio of the Holy See. Sing to the Lord is a good source, but, it is only bindnig when it refers to legislation already in place.

During Papal liturgies that occur during Lent (the Papal Mass for Ash Wednesday comes to mind), instruments (including the organ) are not used. The choir sings/chants accapella.

NB: The Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday. It is the Commemoration of the Lord's Passion. I say this for clarification purposes.

Oh, Benedictgal, I knew you'd know. But in my dilemma, I may have jumped tracks on the subject in my mind without ceasing the typing.

It is not the instrumental music on which I fret, I know the instrument, in our case a [gasp] Roland keyboard is only used to support the singing.. It is the shutdown on choral pieces by our choir during masses during Lent. For example, during offertory on Good Friday our choir has occasionally sung "A Purple Robe", our one and only tenor has sung "The Seven Last Words .....".

And while I'm thinking of it, thanks for your nota bene. I know Good Friday service is not a mass. Brain was ahead of my "thinking"

Blessings to you and to all. Please do not tire of directing me down the correct path!
