PF
I believe the no "left turns on some roads" is called a "Michigan Left Turn"

One turns right and then goes all the way to the left hand side of the road and makes a left into the opposite lane of traffic---is that what you're referring to? I've never seen anywhere but Michigan either.

BTW, Welcome!!!!

do bear in mind that driving in Detroit is analogous to rodeo here in Texas - a risk-taking high stakes sport. I learned to drive on Woodward Ave and I know whereof I speak. also, you better know where you are going on the freeways and know your exit because you only get one chance, there must be a budget shortfall because they are very skimpy with freeway signage

I am a avid Divine Child visitor. It is one of the most orthodox "Modern" parishes that i have ever been too. It is in Dearborn, very large, vibrant parish! Three priest's all ortho, 4 mass' on Sunday, two daily mass' 6:30 and 8:30.

My recomondation is also find out where you are going to settle first and then post. Check out a few churches in the area. If you are willing to drive a bit you can find some wonderful churches.

For all of you out there that think the Arch diocese of Detroit is really that bad, please don't think that. We may have had our problems in the past but there is no doubt we are on our way up-up-up. Priests like Fr. John Riccardo, Paul Ward, Brian Hurley, Bob McCabe, Bob Lacroix, Andy Bloomfield are making this one of the best diocese's to be located in. We also have 30plus seminarians and we ordained 3 this year, 9 last year and 7 the year before. We are looking good!

Come here and make your own judgement.

God bless the fine city of Detroit! A historically Catholic City, with plenty of other history to keep you busy! The sports are great, the weather can get cold, but as far as iam concerned i live in the best city in America!

That is better than my hometown parisg of Greensburg. I think they have a total of 3 in the whole pipeline. If it was not for St. Vincent Archabbey providing priests, they would be in deep trouble. THe previous bishio destroyed the vocations in the diocese. From what I have heard, the new bishop is much better and is very open to late vocations.

BTW. On your private message to me, I have one thing to say.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first read your screen name, I thought you might be Fr. John. He read that beautiful poem by Mother Teresa and when I saw your name, my heart jumped. Fr. John is a great priest and I agree that we have many great priests in Detroit and in its surrounding area. Fr. John Riccardo, Fr. John Hedges, Fr. Bill Ashbaugh (St. Joseph Howell), Fr. Bill Thomas (Holy Spirit Hamburg), Fr. Leo (Holy Spirit Highland). Hurray Michigan!

Well I joined St. Michael's and attended my first Sunday (actually Saturday evening vigil) Mass. Very orthodox in its form.

I was concerned when I looked at the bulletin and saw on the Mass schedule a row with the title "Commentator". I was relieved when the commentator was the one who did the Welcome before the Mass, the General Intersessions, and the announcements. I am use to the cantor and lectors doing those.

I did ask about a spiritual director when I joined. The person on the desk gave me the number to call the Pastor. I am not sure if I am go through the parish or try to find one outside. There is a Benedictine Monastary not too far away (30 miles) and I believe there may be a Carmelite group in the area.

Wander,

I go to the Benedictine Monastery for Mass every Sunday morning. Mass is at 9:30. The Monks are wonderful and the scenery-----breathtaking. After you attend Mass there for awhile, the scenery isn't so distracting. Hope you come on up!!!!

I may just do that. Where I live now is one road over from M24, so it will be almost a direct shot up to Oxford.

I am use to the Benedictines due to attending St. Vincent College in Latrobe. Much of my early formation was under them when I attended there. Ironically, if my desire to become a priest does come true, I will be returning to St. Vincent to attend the seminary.

Hey, neighbor! I'm a parishoner at Sacred Heart in Dearborn.

Divine Child does have very nice, orthodox Masses. I attended Mass there on the Feast of the Trinity a couple of weeks ago (couldn't make the times at SH) and very much enjoyed it. I grew up there and my favorite part of attending the elem. school (besides Mr. Madeleno, the janitor, and the bubble gum he would sneak to kids in between classes) was attending Mass. I've since found a parish home and family at Sacred Heart (also pretty orthodox with priests who are nudging it even further in that direction) but it was good to visit DC- and it's great that we have enough Catholics to keep not only those two, but so many other parishes vibrantly running in the Dearborn area.

Fr. Bob McCabe is a terrific priest and man. He is one of our former associate pastors and my friend's godfather. I haven't met the others but I have heard excellent things about many of them. Great priests, large numbers of Catholics, two big orthodox Catholic radio stations...this really is a good place to be.

Well. I lived up to my NN tonight and decided to wander to another parish just to see how the nearby parishes are since I need one for daily Mass (they have one at 6:30).

Decided to go to the 4:30 Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows parish in Farmingtion. Modern looking church with the tabernacle in the right place. The crucifix, however, looks like it was an afterthought with placed at one corner of the sanctuary and looks like an extra processional crucifix. They also have not implemented all of the new GIRM instructions that I am aware of.

Other than that, I could not get a good read on the priests there since Auxilary-Bishop Hurley was presiding. He gave a good homily, but was a little bit of a road runner (fast talking) on the rest.

All in all, OLS seems to be a nice active parish.

Since I like to attend daily Mass whenever I can, I researched parishes within a 10 mile area from where I am that have Masses on or before 7:00 AM (7:00 ones I limit to 5 miles).

So far, I have visited two of them (Our Lady of Sorrows and the National Shrine of the Little Flower). Of the two, I like the Shrine better for daily Mass.

The other two that I am looking at are St. Regis (Mon, Wed, and Fri only) and Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament (Dominican). Do anyone know about these two? The Dominican Monastary is very convenient since I am very near M10.

The National Shrine of the the Little Flower has many Masses on Sunday. There is a Youth Mass a 6 PM so there is a bit of rock. If you want choral go to the 10:45 AM. I think they have a Summer Choir in the summertime instead of the usual Adult Choir but the music is just as good. The music director has a tendancy to want more traditional music as opposed to rock or folky style music.
Also I guess I should mention their big Master Plan to make this Shrine more welcoming to Pilgrims as well as to improve their school.
Devotions at the Shrine include the Weekly Divine Mercy and Mother of Perpetual Help Devotions on Tuesdays at 6:50 PM. A monthly Devotion to St. Therese on Wednesday at 7 PM and of course Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Also the Holy Rosary is prayed after the 6:30 AM weekday Masses in the St. Therese Chapel.
So if you want to come to the Shrine its a good place to come to.
Now in Berkley which isn't that far from Southfield there is Our Lady of LaSalette Church and the pastor there is very good and is smart and that church is also a good parish.

Also if you want the Tridentine Mass as mentioned before the only one available in Detroit is at St. Josaphat Church.
