Great Parishes in San Diego?

Hello! My brother lives in San Diego (Spring Valley) and is suddenly coming back to Mass after about 30 years away! He's looking for a dynamic parish in town. Can someone speak into this as I'm ignorant of the Catholic landscape in SD. Thanks!

I remember ST John of the Cross in East San Diege, but it has been over 30yrs ago.At the time i was a member of St Didicus and would visit St John's for seminars and prayer meetings. So that was a long time ago...sorry. God bless your brother and I'm sure he will find his need. Great City! Peace, Carlan

Santa Sophia! They are in Spring Valley, have a new, awesome choir director and are in the planning stages of a parish renovation. The school is excellent.

Is he drawn to authentic Catholic teaching, in east county San Diego then St. Ephrem's (Meronite rite) Fr. Nabil is AWESOME in El Cajon next to Our Lady of Grace.
Is he drawn to more traditional Roman liturgy => St. Anne's (Latin Trindentine) <- <3 it
More interested in the conservative Roman rite novus order Our Lady of the Rosary downtown/little Italy with Fr. Louis Solcia
Santa Sophia is in Spring Valley but I've never attended their Masses they have a school so they should have an active community
St. John of the Cross in Lemon Grove I wouldn't recommend, however the priest who was short of canonizing obama in his homily has retired so I don't know anymore. I do know that it is very family oriented.
There is also St. Kieran's in El Cajon but I don't know.
I would recommend churches that have the Tabernacle front and center, versus those that hide and you have to go seek the Tabernacle love seeing Jesus placed front and center

Ascension in Tierrasanta has a pastor who is a great homilist, but Tierrasanta is about 20 minutes up the I-15 from Spring Valley. Closer to home would be St. Anne, an FSSP parish in Logan Heights, if he has an interest in the Tridentine liturgy. They have a wonderful choir. I've also heard good things about St. Kieran in El Cajon. If he has an interest in Eastern Catholic liturgy, St. Ephrem is a Maronite parish and St. Peter is a Chaldean cathedral -- both are also in El Cajon.

It's probably too far from Spring Valley, but I attended St. Therese of Carmel parish in Carmel Valley and really miss it since my move to the Bay area. It's a truly beautiful church with a great pastor.
