When you drive into town, look at all those big amazing buildings. That town wasn't built on winners.

I played the slot machines once. I felt like a monkey, trained to keep shoving the coins in until I could get them all to stay. I played craps under the direction of a friend, who got us off the table with the admonition "don't get greedy" about three rolls before our friends went from winning to losing. I made $40 on the $100 I brought to hazard, but my other friend who stayed at the table and was at the same point as I was ended up losing $50 or $60. You can lose a lot really quickly at that game!

If you go into a casino to gamble, take only the cash you can afford to lose and a watch with the alarm set. Do NOT bring a credit card or an ATM card. Those places are set up to make you lose track of time until your money is all gone, including what's in your bank account back home. If you're playing for fun, choose something that lets you lose your money more slowly, so it lasts. And don't take the free drinks unless you're playing something that requires no brains.

Good luck & have fun... but no regrets, ok? Better yet... do your research and then just spend some money and go see some shows. You and your wife will enjoy each other's company more, and you won't smell so much like stale smoke. Also, Las Vegas now has the outpost versions some of the world's best restaurants, with better prices than their parents. (Still steep, if you're not into high-end cuisine. Las Vegas has great buffets, for the fill-em-up palates.)

Me... if I were dropped into Las Vegas for two days with my husband and a rental car, I'd drive to Zion or Bryce Canyon, or someplace awesome like that. We could not get out of that town fast enough.

From an odds/probability standpoint, playing craps is almost even odds, as long as you don't do side bets, that is.

Some claim that if you understand the game, blackjack is better than even odds, but I don't know the game to that degree.

When you play slots, be aware that to win the big money, you have to be playing the maximum amound of money per pull. I had one person tell me, they would play the $1-$3 slots putting in $3 every time. They were willing to put in hundreds of dollars and claimed if you played long enough you got the big payout. I'm personally not that brave....

Have fun, put that limit on what you are willing to loose, and stick to it!

I NEVER win when gambling. Ever. I went to LV for a conference and didn't spend a dime on gambling. My mother and great-aunt, however, played Bingo and Po Ke No regularly and won. Go figure. Be prepared too for sticker shock if you want to go to a show like Cirque du Soliel.

My game is poker but I wouldn't recomend playing it unless you understand the game and have a little expierience. The best game for causual gamblers is blackjack because you won't lose a lot of money and could even gain some.

Good luck,
Andrew

PS dont give into the temptation of all the immorality in Vegas.

I can play Nickel Slots for hours - it is fun, your hands get all dirty from all those nickels!

Play the lay by the pool, get a tan, go to a few shows, eat good food and stay out of the casinos game.

I learned in my college Stats class that blackjack gives you the best odds of any casino game. Just don't get carried away and take too many hits. lol

Blackjack and craps offer the best player odds in the casino IF you play them correctly.

Craps has slightly better odds but it is intimidating for the new player because there are so many options and there is a lot of fast action. However, the basics are fairly easy to follow. You should try it because it is a fun social game with a lot of variety. Try it on a quiet table where the dealers will help you or get near someone who is willing to help - many players are happy to talk about the game. Some people also don't like having to stand up so much.

Blackjack is also good but make sure you play the "basic strategy". There are mathematically defined "best plays" for every combination of dealer and player cards and you should always play these!!! You can buy a little card with these defined or you can print one out from the internet (here's one: http://casinogambling.about.com/library/blbjmstrat.htm). Don't hesitate to whip out your strategy printout at the table - you don't have to hide it and the dealers will also help if you are confused. DO NOT be afraid to ask - the dealers want you to win; they know you won't be tipping if you are losing.

Also, never be afraid to move on if you are seeing a string of losses at a table - just get up and try another one, these are all streaky games and you shouldn't stick to one on a bad streak.

All the other games have worse odds but you may want to try some of them for a short time just for fun. If you are playing for an extended period, stick to craps and blackjack.

I'll never understand what people see in slots - there is no possible way to figure the odds, which are either bad or badder. There is no socialization - just you and the machine... My suggestion if you need a break is to wander each casino looking for the highest paying slot machine (you'll always find one worth a couple of million) and then make one play in it for the max amount. then go back to the craps or BJ table...

Here's the way I look at gambling...I'm not there in an attempt to win money. I gamble for the entertainment. For me it's like paying to go to a show. I pay for the entertainment of other players and the dealers. Having said all that, I prefer blackjack because it's relatively easy, and I understand it, and if you can find a table that plays with a single deck it is really easy to count cards, thus enhancing your chances of winning.

Since it's you and Mrs SG, cause I wouldn't do this for everybody: get in a cab, tell the cabbie to take you to Lake Mead Blvd and Nellis Blvd (be there at 8PM), there's a phone booth and answer when there's a ring; when you answer say, "I'm just a visitor," the guy on the other end should be Louie, he'll say, "How can I help you, friend?', You reply, "Sport. Bit of sport", Louie will then give you some directions.

Get back in the cab and give them to the driver. When you arrive at the address, tell the driver to wait and go to the front door. Louie should come to the door and identify himself. You can then give the cabbie a signal to leave. Since Louie is goin' to take care of you real good, give him a $50. From then on, the night's yours!

By the way, if it isn't Louie at the door; you might want to run like you know what to the cab. 'Cause it's a raid! Good luck. Have fun. Oh, yes. One more thing: you don't know me.

I had a friend who set up a computer program to flawlessly play various blackjack systems, to see how far up and down his winnings and losses would go. He wanted to be sure he brought enough money to get himself out of a hole, and to know when he'd gotten pretty much the winnings that he could expect, and then quit. The computer played hand after hand, all night, and plotted the results on a graph.

Likewise, he did "experiments" on the various systems for craps.

Let's say that the results convinced me that trying to beat the house did not look like a way to have a good time! I mean really, don't you have a job? Who wants that kind of pressure, for hour after hour, in order to have fun?

Bring what you can lose and tell your friends you're just going for the fun. Maybe read a book on gaming, so you don't feel like an idiot. Then go and have a good time, and if you win a little something, whooohooo!! You can go home and brag! (Even if you did wind up blowing it all later on whiskey and a good cigar. )
