Default Passive Dark Night of the Senses

Please pray for me as I have all the signs of being in a dark night of the senses. Pray for me that I might know what the Lord is trying to purge from me and how to make the best use of the trials I'm going through to reach the goal He wants me to reach. Pray that I might strengthen in all virtues and break the disordered bonds I have in caring too much about my reputation and associating it with things of the world and God instead of God Himself. Pray that I won't care whether I'm externally "Christian" enough in my dress or habits or interests (i.e. Being clean-cut and normal) but at the same time that I won't make the opposite mistake and identify too much with my eccentricities and interests as opposed to with my relationship with God alone. Pray that I might see myself in light of my relationship with God in true humility. Pray that I might find comfort, security. and control not in my own power but in His.

Thank you.

The ascent is steep and Mt. Carmel is high. I wish you the best as you climb it. Let San Juan de la Cruz be your mountaineering guide.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women and
blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.

Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen.

Praying for your intentions….

Lord Jesus, You have said, "Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart." With confidence in Your loving heart which offers rest to weary souls, we come to You in this time of special need. In Your unfailing love, read the prayer that is written on our hearts, and grant the grace that we ask of You, in accordance with Your holy will. In Your name we pray. Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, and sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother, to thee I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate! Despise not my petitions, but, in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

I will pray that your dark night will pass and make you stronger...

Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

This is intense you guys. And I don't mean that like "DUDE, SWEET!" I'm being brutalized by scruples and I'm super-tense (became so bad a few times that I wished for death,) I've lost my pleasure in the things of God and in the things of the world to the degree that I'm bordering on Manicheanism, I'm practically in pain when I try to reason - trying to study fries my brain. I feel like I'm in freakin' Purgatory. The only time I feel sweetness and ease is when I clear my mind and focus on God's presence.

But that brings me to my next point: I'm gonna offer this stuff up and empty Purgatory! Whee! As much as I can at least.

John of the Cross wrote that this is where true spiritual growth occurs. If you can hang on through the aridity and the loss of satisfactions, you will come out the other side grateful for having been though this awfulness. Look at it this way -- your growth in faith led you to this point and it would not have happened if you were not on a path toward a more generous faith. God is giving you this as a difficult gift.

I remember telling my graduate advisor at Fordham that grace is not always nice. He laughed and said that grace is often a kick in the butt. God's giving you what you need. Trust.
