Schiavo Autopsy Released
LARGO, Fla. (AP) - Terri Schiavo did not suffer any trauma prior to her 1990 collapse and her brain was about half of normal size when she died, according to results released Wednesday of an autopsy conducted on the severely brain-damaged woman.
Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin concluded that there was no evidence of strangulation or other trauma leading to her collapse. He also said she did not appear to have suffered a heart attack and there was no evidence that she was given harmful drugs or other substances prior to her death.
Autopsy results on the 41-year-old brain damaged woman were made public Wednesday, more than two months after Schiavo's death ended an internationally watched right-to-die battle that engulfed the courts, Congress and the White House and divided the country.
She died from dehydration, he said.
He said she would not have been able to eat or drink if she had been given food by mouth as her parents' requested.
"Removal of her feeding tube would have resulted in her death whether she was fed or hydrated by mouth or not," Thogmartin told reporters.
Thogmartin said that Schiavo's brain was about half of its expected size when she died March 31 in a Pinellas Park hospice, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed. "The brain weighed 615 grams, roughly half of the expected weight of a human brain. ... This damage was irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons."

Re: Schiavo Autopsy Released
Of course her brain weighed less than normal....she had been dehydrated for 13 days! A body made up mostly of water tends to weigh less when there's no water. I bet King Tut's brain weighed less than normal too. What a stupid statement!

One thing the report proved was she died from dehydration...
which proves she was denied water ...
they wouldn't do a dog that way...you'd be arrested.
Wonder how Felos will spin it

Re: Schiavo Autopsy Released
Didn't we know this was the way it was going to turn out? I mean people were absolutely unglued in their allegations against Mr. Schiavo. I actually began to lose sympathy for Terri's parents with the way that they allowed spurious claims to be leveled on their behalf.
The damage to the brain that was found was consistent with a persistent vegetative state. Now we can argue and debate in this country over what should happen to the thousands of people in that condition, but the evil, unfounded allegations against Mr. Schiavo should stop.
I wait for the retractions and apologies from many in our so called media.

I feel sorry for the thousands of families in this country going through the exact same thing. I pray that I am allowed to be with God rather than to have my body kept alive through totally artificial means; blind, although not knowing you are blind, unable to swallow, and with no cognitive function.

This post says it best:
She should have been given food and water; she breathed, she was human, and that is sufficient.
This was part of a post on the culture of death forum.

The best we can do is agree to disagree. I respect your right to your opinion, but strongly disagree with it. Since the body was cremated shortly after this autopsy, there can never be a "second opinion".
Terri's parents should have been allowed to take care of her. I will never see dehydrating Terri to death as anything but wrong and I admire her family for fighting so hard for her life. They do not owe an apology to anyone as far as I am concerned.

She could swallow and coincidently,Judge GREER Court ordered that they could not feed her naturally either. She had a feeding tube, sort of like a baby has an umbilical cord, apparently they are now both targets for legal MURDER,EXECUTION,ECT.Hitler would be proud he did the same thing to alot of Jews and disabled people and also justified it.

I pray that I can find someone who will see my life as a precious gift and preserve it according to the true teachings of the Catholic Church. Sadly, that's none of the remaining family members I have contact with (I have no siblings, parents and grandparents are dead, no spouse or "significant other", no children) are my aunt, uncle and some cousins who all think the proper decision was made in Terri's case I would hate to end up having my life taken away from me like Terri's was.

Whoops! Where have you been? Persistent vegetative state was never definitively diagnosed. In fact, other diagnoses were made by at least two experts. Terri was found to have a degree of awareness amenable to improvement through therapy.

Arguing and debating requires the participants to be informed. If they are not informed then it is just opinion.
