Default Why did Pope Leo X sanction the selling of indulgences?

Even though it was wrong?

Thanks,

why does a particular poster always pose his "historical" questions in accusatory terms and never once provide any kind of proof for the allegations inherent in his left-handed manner of asking?

Well I thought it was common knowlege....

Here's the first paragraph of his wiki page:
Quote:
Pope Leo X (11 December 1475 1 December 1521), born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, was the Pope from 1513 to his death in 1521. He was the last non-priest (only a deacon) to be elected Pope. He is known for granting indulgences for those who donated to reconstruct St. Peter's Basilica and his challenging of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. He was the second son of Lorenzo de' Medici, the most famous ruler of the Florentine Republic, and Clarice Orsini. His cousin, Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici, would later succeed him as Pope Clement VII (152334).

Here is a more complete source for Pope Leo X, from the encyclopedia on New Advent.

Pope Leo was not a bright spot for the church.

While Pope Leo X certainly had his many faults,
"SELLING of indulgences" was NOT one of them.

What the Pope authorized was the Preaching of an Indulgence all across Europe,
with all the usual attached conditions (genuine repentance, contrition, prayer for the Church and the intentions of the successor of Peter, rejection of attachment to sin),
for those who would make a charitable donation of any amount, for the rebuilding
of the decrepit St. Peter's Basilica.

He was not "selling" the indulgence and, contrary to the wickedest lie ever
told about this, he was definitely NOT "selling salvation", as a Presbyterian friend
once nastily characterized it.

There were, however, some unscrupulous preachers, at least I have heard, who
did make remarks similar to "As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, a Soul
from Purgatory SPRINGS!!"---- although even that is Martin Luther's sarcastic caricature
of what some of those men said, and Luther was well known for his extreme sarcasm.

But the Holy Father never, NEVER, "sold" the indulgence.
You can't just give a certain amount of money and actually receive an indulgence.
It doesn't, and has NEVER, worked that way.

God bless you,
Jaypeeto4
