Default Is it a sin to buy a lottery ticket?

Probably you have already addressed this topic in the past.
But I am new here at this wonderfull website, and I still don't know my way around!
Is it wrong to ask God for a chance to win a lottery ticket?
Appreciate your view!

Thanks in advance!

Greetings Yvy0503,

Depends on circumstances. Do you have debt that is not paid? Do you have another obligation to spend the money? Have you tithed? Ect.....

As to praying that your ticket can win. The more perfect prayer is Lord I would really like to win the lottery, but not my will but Thine.

God Bless.

Thank you so much for your reply anatham sit.
Yes I'm facing difficult times, and I was wondering
if it was morally right to ask God for such miracle.

I thank you so much for your answer!

that is not the question you asked in the thread title

no it is not wrong to buy a lottery ticket, assuming you can afford it, the lottery is legal, and you are not taking money away from other needs. Gambling by itself is not a sin.

Is it wrong to ask God to win? depends on how you ask, and why. If you are motivated by sinful desires, greed etc. it could be. If you are asking in a way that denies purity of heart and poverty of spirit, it could be.

I'd say absolutely not to buy one, especially since some of the money goes towards charities.... it does in the UK anyway!

To ask to win, I want to say yes it is a sin, but this is only my opinion! Purely because there is always somebody worse off than us and we should always want to give to them rather than ourselves. The bible reading of 'The Womens Last Coin' Luke 21 I think. It's a humbling story for sure!

I'll pray for you

Default not a sin

It is not a sin to ask God to give you financial help.

It is not a sin to buy one lottery ticket. Buying 20,000.....I wouldn't go there....

May He bless you abundantly.

Sam was in dire trouble. His business had gone bust and he was in serious financial trouble. He was so desperate he decided to pray for help. He began, ‘God, please help me. I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the lottery.’ Lottery night came and Sam didn’t win. Again Sam prays, ‘God, please let me win the lottery! I've lost my business, my house and I'm going to lose my car as well.’ Lotto night comes and Sam still has no luck. Once again, he prays, ‘My God, why have you forsaken me? I've lost my business, my house, and my car. My wife and children are starving. I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. PLEASE just let me win the lottery this one time so I can get my life back in order.’ Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open. Sam is confronted by the voice of God Himself: ‘Sam,’ says God, ‘meet Me halfway on this. Buy a bloody ticket.’

I don't believe the Bible says anything specifically about gambling. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

It is NOT a sin to play the lottery if:

1. It is done in moderation and does not become addictive / controls you.

2. You have enough money to provide yourself and your loved ones with food, shelter, and all other necessities in order to survive first. In other words, as long as you can afford it after the necessary things are taken care of first.

3. That particular lottery is legal.

Marie Stopes and the Terrence Higgins Trust are two of those charities. Cardinal Keith O'Brien has called for Catholics to boycott the National Lottery. The SPUC have also raised same concerns and includes the National Lottery in its list of organisations which supports anti-life initiatives. http://www.scotsman.com/news/scottis..._cash_1_739598

In the past, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) provide some kind of support before to Catholic Churches here. When the online lottery didn't existed yet, there's the sweepstakes draw every Sunday.

Eventually, the online lottery appeared which made the sweepstakes doing only special draws.

Certain parts of the proceeds from the tickets go to charities, including those of the Catholic Church.

However, this year, the Catholic bishops here got scandalized of reports about receiving charity funds that were used to buy vehicles. Certain bishops were named.

Of course, it was clarified that these utility vehicles were not for their personal use. They use these on their duties to far areas within their [arch]diocese to do their work: charity, relief effort, etc.

Eventually, after the long inquiry by the Philippine Senate, those who got involved to having receiving these funds voluntarily surrendered these vehicles (I think it's 7 of these), leaving them in the Senate parking lot and eventually transferred to the PCSO.

I believe this also sever the ties of receiving funds from PCSO as well.
