Default When does the Christmas Tree come out?

I'm not sure if this is the right area of the discussion forum to ask this, but here it goes.

When is the traditional Catholic time of the season to put up your Christmas tree? The first day of Advent? When should it come down? Thanks!

I believe traditionally that the tree is decorated and lights turned on on Christmas Eve after sunset or just before midnight and then is kept up until the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th) or the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ (January 13th). From what I have read. Of course there is no hard and fast rule though.

When is the Christmas tree in St. Peter's square put up and lit? If it's good enough for the Pope then it's good enough for me.

We usually put ours up a week before Christmas and leave it up until after the Epiphany.

We never had a set date on when we put up the tree. It was usually about the time when the tree vendors drop the prices. We don't usually take it down though until about Jan 13.

One year, my parents had not bought a tree yet, and it was Dec 23, I went out and got one, talked the tree vendor down to $15 from $25. It was a pretty miserable looking tree, but somehow feels like one of the best trees we ever had.

"Traditionally" a Christmas tree is a living thing and also "Traditionally" it was lit by burning candles..

Both of these things means that the Tree trimming etc needed to be handled in a manner that was safe and permitted the tree to be kept for a reasonable amount of time....Maybe a couple of weeks...

Traditionally the Christmas season begins on Christmas and runs through Epiphany...Twelve days. So the tree would go up on Christmas eve and stay up until the feast of the Epiphany.
The time before that is the season of Advent, a time of preparation.

Of course there is no official time when a tree, or other decoration, needs to go up or be taken down. These are decorative things that are not really tied in any liturgical way to the celebration of Christmas at all.

In our house we would put the tree up the weekend before Christmas and leave it up until Epiphany (more or less).

Peace
James

You beat me to it.

When my mother was growing up, they did not decorate their house at all. SANTA did it all on Christmas Eve!!! Not only did he deliver all the presents, but he also delivered, put up, and decorated the tree!!!

We put the tree up earlier than that, we focus on our nativity scene for the seasonal aspect. It goes up early with the tree sans the Infant Jesus, who is added on Christmas Eve by the youngest in the household.

The tree comes down right after Christmas; the nativity scene stays up until the epiphany.

James nailed it!

However, I try to get our tree up by Gaudete Sunday and keep it up well after December 25th to the first day of Epiphany.

since it is not a particularly Catholic, nor traditional Catholic practice, there is no rule about it that fits on this forum. The answer is likely to be whatever you own family did. We always did it the 3rd Sunday of Advent.

Real or fake?

I like to put up lights on the first Sunday of Advent after Mass, whether this be the vigil Mass or one on Sunday.

If I were using a fake tree it would go up with it but a real one two weeks later instead otherwise it would die before Christmas.

Our family tradition is to put up the Christmas tree on the last Sunday of Advent and it remains up until the right after Epiphany.

I follow the Bavarian and Polish tradition. The tree goes up on Christmas eve after the Vigilia feast and it comes down on the Feast of the 3 Kings.
