Thanks! I like your username! Is it from a book or movie or game, or did you just think of it? It just makes me see this mental picture of a surly mermaid. Kind of like Angry Birds - I didn't know what people were talking about at first, then I found out it was a game. Haven't played it myself yet but when I moved into my new apartment there were crows squawking in the trees and I thought, "Angry Birds!"
But I digress . . . a lot . . . hard habit to break.
Meant also to mention that I like Harry Potter - and Twilight, and other teen vampire series as long as they're reasonably well written and entertaining, and aren't "too" dark or occult themed, if you know what I mean. Guess I'd be a Twilight Mom if I had kids! (Do furbabies count? Except that my furbabies would rather chew on books than read them.)
I put up a thread in the book club about the Mary Doria Russell books ( The Sparrow and Children of God) but didn't get any nibbles - would anyone like to read them and join in a discussion about them with me? Another Catholic themed sci-fi novel is A Canticle for Leibowitz which I would also enjoy discussing.
What do you think, ladies?

In case anyone's interested, the thread is still there in Book Club - see
http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=596063
It'd be interesting to have a little "reading group" with these books!

I miss a lot of cultural references.... Such a backlog of movies I need to see -- as in decades' worth.
(Been too busy reading science fiction LOL)

I miss a TON of pop culture references. I just happened to have noticed this was the name of the boat when I took my kids to the film when it came out. Thought it was hilarious!

I like it when I catch a good sight gag or tag like that Some movies and shows you about have to freeze frame to catch the cool stuff. The Harry Potter movies come to mind, for instance.

Haven't yet read The Sparrow or Children of God, but they sound interesting. Canticle for Leibowitz has remained one of my favorites since I first heard it read by the "Radio Reader" on NPR some 30 years ago. I'd love to discuss any or all of them.

Re: Any girls who love scifi / fantasy out there?
Why would this be "weird"?
Is sci-fi and fantasy meant for just male humans?
There are female characters in most of the stories...
Have you ever read Stranger in a Strange Land????
A classic!
One of my favorite novels of all time!!!!!!!!
I was forced to read it in high school and I'd never read sci-fi before...and simply was amazed. This book made me love sci-fi novels. Robert Heinlen was "my first", as it were.

You are indeed correct! Although I will say that being a female sci-fi fan is probably cooler than it was when I was first one. Also there are more female writers and memorable characters than there used to be.

Re: Any girls who love scifi / fantasy out there?
James Tiptree Jr was one of the greats. She used a nom de plum.
Certainly we do have more female obvious female influence these days.

I saw her in a non-Star Trek movie the other day... it weirded me out SO MUCH. Captain Janeway! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Haha. She was a bad guy in the film, clearly. Wish I could remember the name of it? Ah well.
She is a fantastic actress... too bad I can't remember her real name.

Ack, I loved Star Trek Voyager. Captain Janeway, Tuvok, Seven of Nine, Tuvok, and The Doctor. They are great, and I love their character interactions.
