Default What are some good Catholic charities that help the poor?

Hey everyone. I have decided that I want to make a donation this Lent to a Catholic charity that helps out the poor people. I don't care if they help out people in the United States or somewhere else in the world. I just want to send my gift to the most orthodox Catholic charity where it will do the greatest good. What Catholic charities would you suggest?

I give to the United Nations World Food Program.

Many Catholic parishes, including mine, have food pantries. You may want to call around. Possibly with the diocese.

But be quick about it. I donate to our food pantry and frequently volunteer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Because they accept food from nonCatholics and give to nonCatholics the Obama mandate may force Catholic ones to shut down. (The Northern Illinois Food Bank is not church related even though most volunteers are from churches.)

Christian Foundation for Children and Aging is long-standing and while you can make limited donations, adopting a person brings you years of great joy.

Salesian Missions check out their site

Locally - I would go with Catholic Charities, and global, my favorite is Catholic Relief Services (crs.org). CRS has a record of 95 percent of monies going directly to programs that benefit the poor overseas.

I've decided to give to the Little Sisters of the Poor for Lent.

You might consider donating to a small organization called NETwork Against Malaria. They are small and not widely known, but from everything I know of them, they are a good organization. Their mission is to provide insecticide-treated bednets to children and families in Uganda, to lower the risk of contracting malaria. The pastor of my local parish is from Uganda and highly recommends this charity. You can see a video about their work here:

http://catholic-video.blogspot.com/2...ma-uganda.html

Many other worthy charities have been listed in this thread, but NETwork Against Malaria is a small one that you might consider as well.

These are some of the organizations you should NOT GIVE money to:

All American Life League

If it's on this list, they support abortion, contraception, cloning and/or embryonic stem cell research.

I would recommend you use websites like Charity Navigator to look at the organization prior to giving to ensure they are using the money efficiently. The following is a list of 4-star catholic charities:

http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...s&overallrtg=4

I see on that list that Catholic Charities USA spends $0.85 of every dollar to help the poor. I also discovered that the Catholic Answers charity is not very efficient with their money:

http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...ry&orgid=11554

Catholic Answers spends only $0.66 of every dollar on its causes and receives a 1-star rating. CA needs to step it up!

Hi, I would recommend Catholic Relief Services International, and/or your local Catholic Relief Services. You might also check with your parish to see if they support any local shelters for homeless people or expectant mothers. Best wishes!

I've been hearing some controversial things about CRS lately in that they offer birth control and abortifacients to women in Madagascar as well as using 3/4 of the donations for administrative purposes and a majority of their workers are not even Catholic.

The problems or perceived problems with CRS are already being discussed at length over here:

My favorite is www.sistersoflife.org

They work with poor women in the slums to persuade them not to have abortions. In connection with that, they offer them counseling, housing if needed, job training and job hunting, prenatal care. In addition, they give counseling to women who have been traumatized by having had an abortion.

If one is truly prolife and cares about the poor, their mission is a very attractive one to which to contribute. Look at their website and see if you agree.
