Default Hell, Gahenna, Sheol, Purgatory,Limbo & so on

Can someone explain the differences between Hell, purgatory, sheol, gahenna, hades, limbo, and the netherworld are any of these the same place? Different languages? I know what Hell and Purgatory are and what the difference is but I'm not real sure about the others.

Sheol is the Jewish term for the abode of the dead; the same for the Greeks in the word Hades. Scott Hahn observed that the nature of Sheol is almost similar to Purgatory, though officially the Church has not yet said anything in regards to that.

Scott Hahn says:

Gahenna = Hell //// Sheol = Hades

Hades/Sheol ... is where ALL go at death. It has a good sector and a bad sector.

Purgatory is the good sector, where once purgation of those souls bound for heaven occurs ... they are set free.

The bad sector of Hades .... those souls don't get a second chance. They are eventually bound for Gahenna.

Well, I know Scott Hahn's a great guy when it comes to all things Catholic, but this is not what the Church teaches, right!?

We are immediatly judged when we die. We end up going to hell, or we'll go to heaven (by purgatory or not).

Sheol is Hebrew word .... Hades the Greek word for the same.

Christ told Peter in Matt 16:18 "... the gates of Hades will not overpower the Church"

Thus, it might follow that the Catholic Church has ability to influence events/souls in Hades .... at least the Purgatory sector zone.

This could support Catholic belief that Christians can pray for those in Purgatory, and have influence on their penance period, etc. The early Christian Catholic church did practice prayers for the dead ... and it is believed this was taught them by the first Apostles.

Adds something on Paradise. Paradise could represent the 'good sector', where Purgatatory exists ... or Christ may of been talking about yet another intermediate locale.

The fact that Christ told the thief he would be with him in Paradise that very day .... could suggest Hades, since Christ went to the underworld to preach to the OT dead, and to release them from prison

Alternatively, the thief being fully redeemed, may of bypassed Purgatory .... and been @ the locale to which Christ took the released prisoners.
