Default Should women be excluded from the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday?

I would very interested to hear your views on the following.
For the past 15 years, on Holy Thursday, the Bishop and priest washed the feet of 12 volenteer parishoners. in our parish, this has always been a very spiritual experience.volenteers were always a mix of men and women.
However this year, without any consultation, women have been excluded from this practice and the call has gone out for Male volenteers only.
Is this happening anywhere else??
What is this saying about women??
Many thanks
