My kids are into bleach and naruto. Adding to that list is Pokomen, Gintama, Sengoku, High School of the Dead, and Inuyasha. I don't know much about anime other than Pokomen and Naruto yet know that Pokomen is very huge in Japan still (I was there last summer for my annual tour with the Air Force Reserves-Yakota AB). My kids are 18 and 9 years of age-yes, I am getting very old-lol!!!

Re: Who loves anime here?
Hey guys, I just finished watching End of Evangelion and I'm rather depressed. I really don't like the ending because it was so damn depressing. There are major SPOILERS here so be warned.
IFirst of all, I found the sequence where everyone gets turned into tang very, very disturbing, more disturbing than even the infamous rape scene in Elfen Lied to be brutally honest. Whereas the latter made me cry and feel very, very angry at the perpetrator, the former just made me feel sick. I hate how the characters, even the minor ones got turned into tang just like that. But thats not the bad part. I like how the apocayptic maiden Rei tells Gendo to go screw himself and his death was oddly satisfying to be honest but I'd preferred that instead of everyone lying dead, unable to reconstitute themselves except for Shinji and Asuka, everyone actually did reconstitute himself. I'd also preferred it if the whole plan of turning everyone into tang was averted because ultimately, not averting it made the efforts of our heroes pointless. What do you people think? I think I'm going to watch the Rebuild movies now, they look really, really good especially since the original creator is behind them, plus, I hear the characters are more stable. The clip of Shinji saving Rei in 2.0 was just awesome.

Okay-if I must pick, I like Pokomen. Good always wins in the end.

Whats your avatar an image of? Strangely, I can't get my forum avatar to work. I really like Evangelion. Its one of my favorite works of fiction ever, right up there with Watchmen (the comic book that is) which in my opinion is the greatest work of fiction ever created, more than all the classics put together and what not.
Also, lauraabarlow, whats your avatar of?

Re: Who loves anime here?
One question: Why does manga books read backwards and why so much smoke covering on the cartoon characters? I know the reason yet why must that be put in books in the first place? Just asking.

Japanese is read from right to left whereas we read from left to right. Its a bit too hard to make manga exactly like a comic book so aside from translating it, english manga publishers generally leave manga intact.

Detective Conan, aka "Case Closed" as they unsuccessfully marketed it here in the States. The one is my avatar is the main character of that series before he gets turned back into a child.

I've never read the comic book but I did like the movie a lot so I should probably check it out.

I got mine off of the avatar from catholic answers yet think this one came from Elfin Lied-my youngest was thinking that this came from Elfin Lied. I am still learning about manga and anime-my oldest participated in the cosplay the last 3 years at our local library. We actually brought a sewing machine and made his own costume from the anime Peace Maker Kurogane. Sewed together the kimono and the whole works-went really well. The fabric was quite expensive, though. One of my Japanese facebook friends I met while at Yakota befriended my son being that she is also a big anime fan. He has a picture of himself in that cosplay costume on his facebook profile-lol!!

To be more precise:
Japanese, like Chinese and Korean, can be written and read two ways: horizontally and vertically. Vertical texts are read starting from the rightmost column leftwards, from the top down. Horizontal writing is nowadays done in a left to right direction, though right to left was also once common.

I can actually sympathize. Then again, I'm a big, fat sucker for all that's mainstream shounen. Naruto, Fairy Tail, and then you have the seinen versions found in Air Gear, Negima etc. I started out with Pokemon too though (as with at least 50% of anime fans of my generation.) From that though I went on to Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Shaman King, Flame of Recca etc.
I'd expound further on my own tastes but they're er... rather awkward to mention on such a respectable religion forum (already, you can tell I'm giving too much info).

Re: Who loves anime here?
I love many anime characters-many has a positive message in its' stories-of good winning over the bad-and of course-you see many of Japanese cultures infused in these stories-it is huge over thee yet pokemon along with baseball is still huge there.

I'll tell you one thing: if you want to see a Shinji with slightly more backbone, read the manga. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is very infamous for having such a slow production schedule though, but at least he's now currently nearing the end. I'm waiting as to how he would handle Third Impact and all that.

First, I was only joking about the Pokemon fanboys being stupid thing Ok?
To be honest, I don't own a television or cable, I saw Clannad (english dub of course) and all the anime I've seen on the internet. I saw Clannad all on you tube until the videos were deleted. Its not copyright infrigement because neither I nor the uploader were distributing or making money off Clannad through piracy.
What do you think of Evangelion? I think its one of the greatest things I have ever seen. I don't consider myself a fanboy in the sense that I think that if you don't like it then you're an idiot. I hated No Country for Old men for many of the reasons critics loved it. I certainly am a fan in the sense that I love the story, the narrative, the characters, etc... nothing wrong with that. I don't obesses over it but I like its message.
But really, you don't like Haruhi Suzumiya? Why? Sure, some jokes in the beginning did cross the line but Haruhi became much better as a person after Kyon called her out during the making of their film. Its my favorite anime after Evangelion. I love the characters especially Haruhi and Kyon, I love the premise, the setting, the narrative structure, etc... I didn't know ANYTHING about Haruhi until I saw Disappearance, after which I started seeing the two seasons. Its really heartwarming in a subtle way. Even the music is awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtjrB3szKR4
