Default MP3 Downloads

Hello everyone,

We've been working hard to get CA Live available to you on MP3 format and it looks like its almost ready! Here is a link to the MP3 download page:

http://www.catholic.com/radio/mpeg.asp

Keep in mind the page isn't exactly "official" yet; there are surely some kinks to work out. So please feel free to check it out and let us know how it worked for you. We'd like to know about any problems with sound quality, player compatibility, or anything else you run into. And if it works great then we'd like to hear that too! Right now there is about a week's worth of programs available. Eventually, each new program will be posted shortly after it airs live.

Thanks for the help!

Darin

Yay! That's terrific - the sound quality is much better and I can load up a CD with shows to keep me company on my upcoming long drive!

Thank you, CAL!

Both pages are still available.

Which layout is preferred?

I definately prefer the calendar format. Might I suggest, however, a brief description of the show, or at least the name of the day's guest? - (similar to your normal archive view).

By the way... THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH.

I drive an hour each way to work every day, and a CD with one of your programs is the perfect commute soundtrack. It's honestly helped me in my efforts to sanctify my day, by helping me start and end what can sometimes be quite a hectic workday with thoughts of God and His Church.

Thank you again for this wonderful addition to your many awesome services, and God bless you for everything you do!

I agree, the calendar view is, IMHO, much better!

Unhappy 16MB per file???? YIKES!

16MB per file???? YIKES!!!

The masses using dial-up (including this author) are out of luck!

Is there a more compact version that can be downloaded instead?

I'm not affiliated in any way with Catholic Answers, but I do know a bit about audio files. My understanding is that the RealAudio format will still be available for download, for those who are on dial-up and want a smaller file size. The problem with making the mp3 files smaller is that you would have a corresponding decrease in sound quality. Make the files too small, and the sound quality won't be much better than the currently available RealAudio files.

We are dealing with almost an entire hour of audio per file here, so 16 MB really isn't that big. As a comparison, an hour of audio on a CD (uncompressed) takes up roughly 600 MB. Or encoding an hour-long CD in mp3 format at 128 kbps (which is generally regarded as the minimum bit rate needed for "CD quality" sound) takes about 60 MB. Looking at these numbers, I would say that 16 MB for almost an hour of audio seems pretty reasonable.

And if you do want a low-quality mp3 file, with similar sound quality to the currently available RealAudio files, there are numerous shareware programs you can download which will convert the RealAudio files into mp3 format for you.

Or maybe it's time to upgrade your internet service. :-) Where I live, the local phone company offers a "DSL Lite" for $30/month. It's much faster than dial-up, but not as fast as full DSL service, and it doesn't cost too much more than dial-up (especially if you have high per-minute charges on your phone bill in addition to the $10 or $20 you pay per month to your ISP). I don't know if the same thing would be available in your area, or if you even would want to pay $30/month, but it's just a thought.

Just my two cents.

Paul

Actually, lepanto's comment about the file size gives me an idea. Perhaps Catholic Answers could offer a service to all members of their Radio Club: Every two months (or thereabouts), they could mail out a CD containing the previous two months' worth of shows in mp3 format. This would allow those with dial-up connections to get the higher quality files, without having to spend hours and hours downloading each one. Just a suggestion -- I have no idea whether this would be feasible, or how many people would want this.

Yeah, I agree that it must be tough to deal with this on dial-up, but you still have access to the relatively small RealAudio files.

When I record an hour of CA Live with my audio-grabbing application, it comes out to about 24 MB. So I see 16 MB as a slight improvement

Actually, it's amazingly small! The "standard" compression settings in use results in 27MB for 30-minute shows like Radio Vatican and Focus on the Family. So this is a smaller file for twice the content!

I already do, provided that your padcatcher supports ftp transfer (iTunes doesn't, podget does). See this thread about it: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=68523

I've been downloading the real audio file for some time now and then run Streambox Ripper to convert them to mp3. However, in the last couple of days I haven't been able to download the audio files. Does anyone know if CA is having problems with their server?

I love to listen to the shows on my little Creative MuVo mp3 player.

This is the coolest thing. I bought a mp3 player for my car and have been using the same old CD to listen to the same old songs.
Now I just dowloaded 17 MP3 files of CA and it is like I have Catholic radio available with a Catholic Answers marathon going on!. It is great, except that gas prices are so high I wont be taking too many long trips in my car.

Thank you Catholic Answers for the MP3 availablity it is great for those of us without Catholic radio.

I would buy archived MP3 CD's of Catholic Answers.
