Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper?
On the occasion of the Last Supper, was Judas there and did he receive the Eucharist before betraying our Lord?

Re: Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper?
This verse indicates that Judas was indeed there when Jesus handed it out. There are many indications that Judas did indeed receive it that night, not to mention the prophecy that it would fulfill.
Psalm 41:9 - For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.

Yes the first three gospels seem to imply this but the Gospel according to St.John30:13" When therefore he had recieved the morsel he went out quickly.." Judas left right after dipping and eating the morsel.St.Mark, as does St.Matthew, place the identification of the betrayer before the Eucharist.

I was undecided on this just a few minutes ago, but the verse that convinced me was this one-
"But behold the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table." (Luke 22:21)
He said this after consecrating the bread and wine, which indicates that Judas was present after the consecration. I don't think Jesus would consecrate only some bread and give the unconsecrated bread to Judas.

How does this prophecy imply it is consecrated bread?

Re: Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper?
It is consistent with 1 Corinthians 11:29, which describes the unworthy reception of the Eucharist as earning one's damnation. Judas had already agreed to the betrayal some time before, and waited his chance to hand Jesus over.

why do you ask
we are taught to love one another as I have loved you by Jesus himself at this time. Jesus didn't turn anyone away even when he knew all what was to happen.

Just going off what Augustine wrote:
Quote:
|
The man of My peace, in whom I trusted, which did eat of My bread, has enlarged his heel against Me Psalm 40:9: has raised up his foot against Me: would trample upon Me. Who is this man of His peace? Judas. And in him did Christ trust, that He said, in whom I trusted? Did He not know him from the beginning? Did He not before he was born know that he would be? Had He not said to all His disciples, I have chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? John 6:70 How then trusted He in him, but that He is in His Members, and that because many faithful trusted in Judas, the Lord transferred this to Himself?...The man of My peace, in whom I trusted, which did eat of My bread. How showed He him in His Passion? By the words of His prophecy: by the sop He marked Him out, that it might appear said of him, Which did eat of My bread. John 13:26 Again, when he came to betray Him, He granted him a kiss, Matthew 26:49 that it might appear said of him, The man of My peace.

The bread of Jesus in my mind is clearly the Eucharist, else it would be the same bread the rest of us have.

Did Judas receive the Eucharist? Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.

Re: Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper?
The Answer to the Question of Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the last Supper is a NO
When know this from the 13 th Chapter of Gospel of John .
Joh 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
Joh 13:22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
Joh 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Joh 13:24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
Joh 13:25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Joh 13:26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dippedit. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
Joh 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
Joh 13:28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
Joh 13:29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
Joh 13:30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
We know he (judas) did not receive the Eucharist because the 3rd cup of wine ( the cup of redemption what Christians call communion) happens after the dipping of the sop and verse 30 clearly says judas left immediately after the dipping.

Re: Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper?
I think the question is, was the bread and wine transubstantiated at the Last Supper? Think about the fact that none of the apostles at this time had the Holy Spirit. In fact, outside of Christ, the Blessed Mother was the only person on earth who had received the Holy Spirit, and she was not present at the Last Supper. So, yes, this was the institution of the Eucharist, but I think it is safe to say that the bread and wine were not changed into Christ's Body and Blood at tht time. If it was, then Christ desecrated his own body and blood by giving it to unrepentant sinners.
Also, if the bread and wind had been changed at the Last Supper, wouldn't all of the fragments and leftover wine have to have been carefully gathered together and safely put away to be used later? That would never have happened because the apostles at this point had absoloutely no understanding of what Christ was doing and saying. Christ was merely showing them how it was done for the time when they would understand.
So in a technical sense, no, Judas did not receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper because no one did. This is also proved by the fact that right after this, they all ran away in fear, with the exception of John, of course, who stayed by Mary's side. That says to me that to stay with Mary is to stay by Christ, but that's a topic for another thread.

Nothing in this passage implies it is consecrated bread. I completely agree with you. None of the apostles were worthy of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ at this point.

This is the first time that I've heard this idea.
I find it difficult to believe that the apostles who had the power to consecrate the bread & wine, were not indeed the first ones to receive the Body & Blood from Jesus.
I find it difficult to believe that when He said "This is My Body" & "This is My Blood", that this was NOT the first occurrence of the 1st transubstantiation of bread & wine into Our Lord's Body & Blood.
Can anyone cite a church document that speaks to this suggestion?
(I do not fault anyone's opinion, as I simply do not know of any authoritative source that speaks to this particular suggestion one way or the other.)

There are two questions here.
First, "On the occasion of the Last Supper, was Judas there?" The answer: YES, based on Luke 22:14: "And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him." So, the twelve apostles were present at the Last Supper, which means that Judas also was present.
Second, "Did he receive the Eucharist before betraying the Lord?" Again, the answer is YES. Because the Eucharist was given to the apostles after the consecration, and the Judas left after receiving the consecrated bread: "He [Judas] then having received the morsel, went out immediately" (John 13:30).
In the text from John, "to receive" means "to eat." This interpretation is consistent with an earlier passage from John where Christ, referring to Judas, said: "He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me" (John13:18).
