I couldn't agree more.

I don't know Texas well but it seems like a nice place and I'm not in favor of making it less like itself than it is.

If you haven't heard of Equi-search, they are a horse-based search group that originated in Texas. Now they go all over the world to help search for missing persons.

And I will repeat: Coming to a state to work and benefit from our low taxes and low cost of living, and then complaining about it, is poor manners. If I left Texas and moved to Maryland for work, I would swallow my criticism and thank God for my job, and make the best of it. And try to be nice, and friendly, even if my neighbors were cold and clannish Yankees.

Marylanders aren't Yankees.

Depends who you ask. In the North, Yankee may be limited to those from
New England, however, overseas the term is used of all Americans.

In the old South, it is used of everybody in the USA not from the former Confederacy. That would include Md.

As I told many people when I was in Texas, watch who you call a Yankee. I have a lovely bumper sticker on my toolbox that says "I don't brake for Yankee fans!" I HATE THE YANKEES!!!

GO RED SOX!!!

Anything north of the Mason-Dixon line is Yankee territory. Yeah I know Maryland was a slave state but there was no secession.

Yankee means a Northerner, usually someone with a high and mighty or a nasty attitude. State of origin is less important than the attitude.

You can't really go by the recognized 11 confederate states.

My New Orleanian girl friend from long ago used to say that Arkansas "isn't really the south" either. I'm not sure Atlanta is really a "southern city" anymore, and I don't think anybody would characterize northern Virginia as "southern" anymore. Being a Southerner is somewhat relative.

I live in southern Mo; in the Ozarks. Well north of me is a part of the state referred to as "Little Dixie", and for good reason. Then, there's the Mississippi "Delta country" of southeast Mo. All of those places are southern by almost any yardstick. Missouri was admitted to the confederacy, though the Union never recognized that. Any Missourian will, however, admit that despite its southern history, St. Louis is now profoundly "Yankee", as is Kansas City. I have never been to Maryland, so I can't comment on its "southernness" or "Yankeeness" either one. But I'll bet I could reasonably characterize it pretty quickly if I was there.

As to Texas, I'll have to admit that I would a lot rather live there than in some frigid place like Iowa, let alone Minnesota. People who move here from up north say we "have no winter worthy of the name" and that's even more true in Texas. Maybe you have to grow up in a Texas-like climate. I recognize that Texas has lots of climates, but on the whole it's pretty hot and relatively dry in most of it. I rather like it myself.

My father's people settled over near West Plains. A small town called Peace Valley, which is still there but barely. I love the Ozarks, it's in my blood. And yes, I know what you mean about St. Louis. Definitely NOT the South. A charming town, and they have a wonderful bishop, lots of nice churches, but not the South.

Since I'm inviting folks over, you're welcome to come visit too! Heck, you can even stay if you want! Yes, it gets hot. Some of Texas is dry, windy, and flat. Some is covered in trees, and quite humid (Houston, East Texas, the Piney Woods). We have a great climate for your skin!

If I had a bilocational body, I'd love to go to all of those places and then some!

But to lay my head long term -- Austin, TX, no question

You do realize that Austin is full of hippies? Old, young, in between? VERY liberal city, it's the capital and where A Texas University is located. Lots of fun to visit, would drive me NUTS to live there.

Whole Foods started in Austin.

I love to visit my family in Austin and go often, but I've learned to avoid hearing local news
and reading the local newspaper when I'm there. Helps to not go nuts just visiting there!
LOL , have yet to find a way to avoid the obnoxious, rude, !#+**, bumper stickers though.

I lived there for over a decade.

There are few if any genuine hippies there, other than overage wannabes. And who wants to live around conservatives full time? Political disagreement makes life more fun.

AFAIAC, in Texas, Austin is the place to be.

I'll have to remember that, though I do try and avoid being there overnight. Most of the time I just hum the Aggie War Hymn as I pass through or play patriotic music. It helps me keep my focus.
