Nah it's a gimmick. DC and Marvel comics are produced to make money ultimately at close of day. The most well written comics do explore themes about humanity that are of interest, but comics are an event driven genre. DC has been lagging behind Marvel over the last couple of years, this is an attempt to steal a march and some media time.

DC has had gay characters on the books for years, and some bisexual ones to, yet now it choose this momen to make this annoucement. The cynic in me would say as Gay Pride month is upcoming that is not unrelated.

When other minorities first appeared in comics prominently you didn't see Stan Lee go to the media about Black Panther appearing in Fantastic Four. Although if comics had more recognition in that era I'm sure Stan (who is a self confessed shameless publicist) would have.

There are plenty of other minorities who are terribly badly written in comics generally. I have yet to see (with a very few exceptions) non Americans written well. Then again superhero comics are ultimately very much an American genre.

Turns out the character in question here is Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern. This is really disappointing, not to mention confusing considering he was married and had two children, both of whom were/are heroes in their own right.

Details (and, unfortunately, pics) here: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/nationa...=SFnewyorkpost

He was married in the previous continuity. DC has rebooted all their books in the recent past, although with the usual half-baked approach they take to doing that. Alan's son was gay in the previous continuity and had been shown as such for many years. It wasn't his only defining trait though. He was more interesting for his struggles with extreme depression arising in part from an abusive childhood.

Angry Re: DC Comics to introduce gay character

Leave Bruce Wayne out of it, I say! There has been plenty of evidence to the contrary! This is absolutely unnecessary! The homosexual agenda truly does spread like a virus, corrupting everything it touches! I know, for one thing, I would have not been able to enjoy the animated Batman series from the early 90s if they pushed the homosexual agenda. Keep comic books for superheroes, laughs, and just a general escapism, not political agendas!

"There's another character down the line."

So, an unannounced character.

This is looking like a trend to me.
