Happy Pentecost -- the Reason for the Seasons
Happy Pentecost!!!!!!
I first got excited about Pentecost when I was in Church in California, the vigil of Pentecost, 2000. THAT is when I realized that is really my most important holiday. "Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth."
Christmas? Part of the process -- nice story.
Easter? Part of the process -- nice story.
Pentecost? Where the rubber hits the road.
Jesus was just getting started on Christmas, and Easter He conquered death, and He left us to go to His Father. But He did not leave us orphans. Today we officially got "hooked up" with the Helper who guides us through all of our days.
Normally I play piano at 8 AM Mass, but this morning I think I'll go practice at least the opening hymn on the organ early (it's 5:20 so I have plenty of time) -- I mean who doesn't want to hear "Come, Holy Ghost" on the organ? I'll bring my camera to practice and record me playing it, so I can share video of it on this thread later today! Coming soon to a thread near you!
Alan

A very Happy Pentecost to you too Alan. Hope the playing went well! May the Holy Spirit fill your life and heart and be with you and your family, now and forever. Amen!

Re: Happy Pentecost -- the Reason for the Seasons
Happy Pentecost! Or as my priest says "Happy Birthday Church!"
I would really like to encourage everyone out there to offer your Holy Communion for the unity of the Church today. It's the perfect day to offer this special intention. I know Jesus grieves that His Church has so many seperated bretheren-- protestants, Eastern Catholics, etc. So as we receive the Body, let us offer a prayer for the Body, on the day that we celebrate the birthday of the Church. May we truly be One Holy Catholic Apostolic.

Re: Happy Pentecost -- the Reason for the Seasons
Well ...
... the organ practice didn't go very well, so I played the piano instead. I'm better at piano than organ.
It just didn't seem right. The sunlight was in my face so I was ducking down to hide behind the music, and I played some wrong notes, and it sounded a little "klunky" so I opted out. The music arrangement I had was actually better on piano.
But I did upload a video of it, since I said I would, warts and all ... enjoy!
Besides, last time I got talked into playing organ nobody said anything. You know what musicians like? Someone to come over after Mass and tell them they liked their music. Take five extra seconds and show your musicians some love!
Alan
Edit: in case that video was too painful, here's one a little better, from last month. Alleluia, Alleluia, Let the Holy Anthem Rise.

Thank you for uploading this, Alan. It's nice to see what you look like and put a face to the name!
I'm very impressed, in all honesty. I'm a pianist myself but the organ would be a tad too much coordination for me!

I am a pianist also, but I took a few organ lessons. I got fired at St. Anthony a few years ago because my leg went weird and I couldn't play the right bass. Even the tonedeaf knew I was in trouble! So now I'm finally "tiptoeing" back into organ playing. Meanwhile, at my home church I just play piano, so when I play organ the people usually make a big deal over it.
Organ is actually pretty fun. The pedals you just do simple exercises and soon they feel almost normal.

Ah, that's a bit reassuring to hear that the pedalling becomes second nature in the end. Maybe I should make my best friend teach me the basics some time! He's training to become a professional organist.
I fear now, though, that I don't have the patience to take up a "new" instrument I'm rather lazy like that Also I can't really bear to play either of my instruments at the moment, let alone take up a new one
So yeah, I continue to be very impressed by your determination in your musical endeavours
