Religious leaders hold nationwide rallies to protest Obama healthcare mandate
Approximately 164 cities in the 50 States joined Stand Up for Religion rally held at noon today, June 8, 2012.
Naples, Fl. I estimated there were about 200 people on Rt.41 there to hear the Bishop asking for support against the HHS mandates requiring religious charities to provide health care products and services which are against the teaching of the Chruch.
Those driving by gave the thumbs up sign and blew their car horns in support. A Methodist held a sign "We support our Catholic brothers" and a Jew was there waving the Star-of-David with the American flag. Saw grads from Notre Dame and students from Ave Maria along with priest and nuns, grandmothers and grandfathers, and families with kids.
How did it go at your rally?

I was at the Chicago rally and it was jampacked. About 40 counterprotesters across the street, but no one could hear them.

Wish I could have joined the one in Portland but I'm having work done on the house and need to be home.

Re: Religious leaders hold nationwide rallies to protest Obama healthcare mandate
There was a decent crowd in Detroit. Auxiliary Bishop Byrnes, among others, spoke. We were blessed with the weather, as well.

Re: Religious leaders hold nationwide rallies to protest Obama healthcare mandate
We had about 300 here in Pensacola and our new Bishop gave the invocation.

Re: Religious leaders hold nationwide rallies to protest Obama healthcare mandate
The rally in Santa Ana, California was really nice. It was in the court of the flags (our 50 state flags surround it), in the shadow of several very tall buildings including the courthouse.
There was a predominance of Vietnamese people there (I am guessing a bit here but the ones with South Vietnamese flags here and there bear me out); but a nice mix of people of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and faiths. Though I'd say the majority of people there were probably Catholic.
I saw a group of Vietnamese nuns, the color guard was from the Boy Scouts and "American Heritage Girls" (no "girl scouts" visible to me but the crowd was big).
The speakers were excellent and varied, including a Pearl Harbor veteran, a Jewish professor from Loyola Marymount, local pro-life leaders including Kathleen Eaton (who has founded many pro-life clinics and placed them close to Planned Parenthood facilities) and paralyzed Christian singer Renee Bondi who led a spirited several choruses of "America the Beautiful".
While dealing with a dire subject (religious freedom in jeopardy) the mood was generally good and upbeat with many smiles and milling around by the crowd after the formal presentations were over. Not a bad crowd for noon on a workday in a "not Freeway close" part of town.
