Default Your thoughts on Psychics (important answers)

Hello, i have an important topic. Psychics. I have to be honest, i am a lost a bit sad type of person, for a couple of years now. And i do pray. I fear God and i want to honor him and show him that i love and respect him, but my anxiety has been very haunting with i guess 4 years. So i've been concerned with my future, my life, and if my dreams will get shattered due to my emotional state.

So with in these years, i've encountered a priest who does blessings and also is known to have the ability to read allot of hidden issues of a person. He read me, and everything he said about me was right.

However, i've been raised in a catholic and a protestant like household so i hold skepticm towards these things.

Now, just today, i went to a psychic because i am distressed and the moment i said hi to her, she new every single thing about me (my issues) and my family issues.. The issues, hopes and what's on the minds of my parents. Every single thing she told me was accurate and i never said anything or gave any description. Sure, as regular Psychics, she gave future readings, and i'm planning to take my masters, and one of her readings was that i'm going to back to school in the future and gave me the reasons why i want to. She never denied God, she said that one of the things i need is an enlightenment from God.I need faith. However she also offers me spiritual healing (i'm still thinking of it) which brings me here. I am scared about myself, you know i've lost someone who i love so much and for some reason i'm hated by her, and i've been betrayed by her. I'm also in search and working as hard for a good happiness, praying for the last 6-4 years but still end up in this distress. I'm not saying God doesn't answer my prayers, a part of me feels he led me to this person but then again, my bible knowledge is that Psychics are not acceptable to us christians.

I don't care if you don't believe in Psychics, i'm still skepticle as it is, but i honestly say that her knowing all this and the secrets of my parents were genuinely right. I'm a bit tempted to go back to her for the healing but at the same time i feel like it's wrong still... however maybe there are people that are given these gifts to help others. I mean some christians think it's wrong because it's like denying God and not trusting him because God holds your future and is the one who is all knowing, but if that's the case then should Christians look down upon medical doctors as well, since they can cure the sick through their ability, why trust Doctors with a persons life when God is the only one with authority of life and death? I'm not sure if this premise makes sense. I do want to hear intelligent views on Psychics, Psychic healings. I may go through with this but at the same time, i don't want to lose God's respect or be seen as a man who doesn't trust god but is this God's way of helping me through people he has given gifts to?

I don't know.. thank you for the responses.

The only ultimate cure to our personal problems is a relationship with God! We can make our selves feel better for awhile with other temporary remedies (such as a psychic) but ultimately only God can make us right, for he made us. We are hardwired from birth for a relationship with God and we are never fulfilled until we establish that relationship. Since you are Catholic, I would contact a priest at a local parish, talk to him, attend mass and keep praying. I'll pray for you also!

Psychics are at best scam artists and at worst demonic. Consulting them may in fact be direct cooperation with evil.

God wants you to trust Him no matter what happens in life. The only one who knows what the future holds for you--both in this life and the life of the world to come--is God Himself. Trust in Him above all things, and pray that He sends forth His Holy Spirit to guide you and help you to discern His plan for you and your life.

It is true that some of God's faithful, especially priests, have the ability to look beneath the surface and into the hearts of men and women. Padre Pio is one especially notable example. But you must beware of the wolves in sheep's clothing who would lead you astray so that the Evil One may consume you when you are at your most vulnerable.

Please, stay away from those who claim to be psychics. They are not men and women of God, and it is a sin to consult them. Trust in Him--He will take care of you. I would talk to a local priest ASAP, particularly a pastor, and seek spiritual direction.

God bless you! I am praying for you.

I wouldn't dabble with any traps satan has laid out, realize that he is scummy and disgusting, but he is clever. Ask Saint Micheal to take out the trash.

Ask yourself WHERE does this knowledge and 'healing' come from?

If it's not coming through the Church it's probably not coming from God.

The Psychic knows things she shouldn't - that isn't a natural ability.
She claims to see the future - this isn't natural either.

No matter how accurate what she says is, you have to consider the source. It might seem very good, it might seem helpful but it is not of God.

Turn your back on these false forms of comfort and cling to our Lord. It won't be easy. He warns us that the path will be difficult, but if you cling to Him you will come out as a child that has roughed the fire and is now golden.

Interesting little anecdote but I know a lady who went to a 'psychic' but she was praying the whole time because she was uncertain. The woman ordered her to stop praying because as long as my friend was praying she couldn't see anything. I thought that was very telling.

This is the right way to think about it.

The fact that someone who doesn't know you knows your personal past, thoughts, and future...this is supernatural. She is not doing it in the name of Jesus Christ. The revealing of personal details and future events (any exorcist or person familiar with the devil) are tricks of the evil one. He entices people with what seems very good, and leads them to what is very bad. This "healing" is something you should run from, run right into the arms of Christ. People who turn to psychics, healers, and all kinds of supernatural rituals that are not of Christ, often DO see short-term relief, only to realize that they have entered into a long-term problem by accepting "help" from the devil.

Pray, and pray hard. Maybe this is an experience God has allowed you to have to draw you closer to Himself. But please don't continue with this, turn to Christ for everything. Even if you are allowed to suffer, it is for a greater purpose. Evil is real, flee from it.

In Christ through Mary,
Frank

Not all psychics are evil. Some do have a gift from God. But here's the rub. What do they do with the gift? And is their use of the gift glorifying God and leading people to Him? The Bible is full of people you would call "psychics" nowadays, only the term "prophet" was used.

She may indeed have some sort of insight to your life situation. It may be a gift. This world is full of the supernatural, meaning not normally natural, yet not necessarily evil either.

Again, how does God's kindgom benefit from her abilities? How does her ability lead people to Christ? If she's not, then she's misusing her abilities.

Again, consult a priest or spiritual advisor as always.

All of this is just my humble opinion of course. Do with it what you will.

God bless you!

Search Catholic.com on Psychics. There are plenty of resources.
I'm listening right now to a Magician/Mentalist who is talking about supposed Psychic powers.

http://www.catholic.com/radio/shows/...harlatans-6775
http://www.catholic.com/node/5330/6775

Ask yourself...

1) Do they ask for money?
2) Do they claim that the power is something that they 'possess' or 'have' which others do not? Even if they claim that it came from God.
3) Does it cause you to turn towards THEM for guidance and help rather then God?

If your answer is YES or even "kinda" to any of these answers - then these people are not 'of God' and lead you away from God and not towards him.

Some other points...

IF the Holy Spirit gave them this ability, would it be right for them to 'sell it' What other gifts of the Holy Spirit are we then allowed to sell and make money off of?
The Catholic church doesn't sell its services, it asks for donations and it doesn't take credit as if it alone has these 'powers'

There is something called "confirmation bias" - which a lot of people fall into.
We all tend to remember when something fantastic happens, but forget, quite quickly, when things don't work out.
What I mean is.. when a Psychic guesses right... the story gets spread across the media. When hundreds of Psychics are wrong or a particular psychic is wrong... we forget about it.

TEST:
and the order is important...

1) Ask them if they've helped the local Police, Interpol, Government, etc. - Most are very upfront and self promoting, so they will say "YES, many times" - usually

THEN

2) Ask them where they were on 9/11/2001 - why, if they have helped Law enforcement and other organizations in the past.. did they NOT do something about 9/11?

The fact that Psychics everywhere didn't alert authorities about 9/11 - kinda disproves Psychics or that their power comes from the Holy Spirit. I can see why Satan would withold that information, but not the Holy Spirit

The only one who can bring you healing is Jesus. Don't forget that. He gives us living water that quenches our thirst. Every other thing we try to put in his place may satiate our thirst momentarily, but it always returns. Put your trust in Christ.

I am sorry to hear of your struggles. Life can be hard, there's no doubt about that. It's quite common to want to know about the future and to seek some sort of comfort in "knowing" what the future holds (though, of course, it is rather dubious as to whether a psychic can actually provide you with true knowlegde in that regard). And remember the Church doesn't condone consulting psychics and the like (because she recognizes the harm that can come to a person by doing so).

Like it or not, we simply cannot know the future with certainty. We have to come to terms with the fact that there are certain things we will not have certainty about. However (and this is critically important), the Lord is our rock. He is constant. He never changes. And He'll never leave us. Put your trust in Him. He's the only one who will not fail you.

I also recommend talking with a priest about this. He'll be able to guide you in ways that we cannot do over the internet.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Del,

God created us in his image with a soul, intellect and the ability to create and manipulate his Creation. Don't you think if we were meant to have full knowledge of the future and the dead, we would all have it?

The problem isn't whether or not it's okay to see a psychic -- you know well that it's not, despite your misgivings. The problem is how to resolve your emotional issues and who can help you do it appropriately. For that you need to turn to your friends, your loved ones, a neighbour, and perhaps a therapist who is trained to help people with these sort of things. All we can offer you are our well wishes and prayers. God bless you and I am praying for you.

Stay away from psychics. Their ability comes from the evil one. To consult them is to open the door to the demonic in your life.

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I would suggest looking for a practicing Catholic who is a psychologist or psychiatrist. God does work through doctors. Ask your priest for who they would suggest. You should see him first anyway.

Also, and I strongly urge this in addition to the above:
1) try going to mass during the week...every day is ideal but at least two or three times.
2) spend time in Eucharistic adoration if it is offered in a church near you, a couple hours per week. Read the bible and/or pray the rosary during this time. But also take time to simply listen to God in silence, especially as you read the bible passages and pray.

God bless!
