Not sure if this is miraculous ... let the icon be cleaned of soot and then decide. It's certainly blackened on the left side and it looks like in the relief (seems to be a carved icon rather than a painted copy), so this may very well be damaged.

The image of la morenita is the only image of mary that is pure, yes all others are beautiful, but she's the only one that left behind a picture of herself on San Juan Diegos tunic. Perhaps this is why she survived.
Same thing happened down here in San Juan del Valle, guy crashed a plane into the church, but the virgin image survived unscathed...that's why they built a basilica down here. Check it out!
Viva la morenita!

Think of it: our Lady will not allow to damage her Son our Redeemer's image but just left her own image if this is a miracle.

Like I said before...he images of Christ on the crucifix are images that we have developed out of texts...but the virgen de guadalupe is truly the only image of Mary left by her on the tunic. It is a true depiction. And maybe god left her image to exemplify her importance to us. She is the blessed mother...
But you also make a very good point.
But I think it is indeed a miracle.

The article says, "The cause of the fire was ruled accidental after officials found the chapel was illegally taking its electricity from a utility pole." Anyone else found that ironic?
Other than that amusing sentence, I think it's a beautiful story, sure to inspire many and hopefully bring some people back to the church.

Take a look at this picture and understand that everything around it was completely destroyed. There was no extra protection around the image, and yet there it is. There is a little soot damage, but nothing else. This is nothing less than a miracle.
I would offer that there were probably angels around the image protecting it.
