Default Fox correspondent named senior Vatican communications adviser

VATICAN CITY - The Associated Press has learned that the Fox news correspondent in Rome has been brought in by the Vatican to help improve its communications strategy as it tries to cope with one of its most serious scandals in decades.

People familiar with the move told AP on Saturday that Greg Burke will become the senior communications adviser in the Vatican's secretariat of state.

Burke said Saturday he had no comment, as did the Vatican spokesman.

Burke, a member of the conservative Opus Dei movement, is a former Time magazine correspondent. Pope John Paul II's longtime spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, was also a member of Opus Dei.

Cool. I didn't know Greg Burke was an Opus Dei member.

But he's from Fox, so he's obviously partisan.

Good to see.

Ah, but he used to be a reporter for Time magazine, so it balances out.

Seriously, is anyone familiar with his body of work?

Now that the news, which was leaked before Vatican approval, has had a chance to settle in, more information is available.

Quote:
"I'm a bit nervous but very excited. Let's just say it's a challenge," Burke said in a phone interview.

He defined his job, which he said he had been offered twice before, as being along the lines of the White House senior communications adviser: "You're shaping the message, you're molding the message, and you're trying to make sure everyone remains on-message. And that's tough."
Quote:
After Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005, Navarro-Valls was replaced by the Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Jesuit who had long headed Vatican Radio and still does, along with running the Vatican press office and Vatican television service.

Lombardi told the AP that Burke will help integrate communications issues within the Vatican's top administrative office, the secretariat of state, and will help handle its relations with the Holy See press office and other Vatican communications offices. Burke will report to the Vatican undersecretary of state and the official who oversees Vatican communications in the secretariat.

Media adviser role is positive step for Vatican, says new US appointee

Quote:
The establishment of a new post of senior communications adviser is a step in the right direction to help the Vatican deal with the challenges of a sound-bite culture, said the American journalist appointed to the job.

Greg Burke, 52, was named to the newly created position in the Vatican's Secretariat of State and will start in July. The announcement was made on Vatican Radio June 24.

Burke, a native of St. Louis, told Catholic News Service June 25 that his job will be to help "shape the message" coming out of the Vatican and make sure everyone there "stays on message."

It's a role similar to the White House's director of communications, who supplements the work of a more visible spokesperson, Burke said, as he described some of the challenges he plans to address: "What's the message we want to get out? How do we get it out?" And how does the Vatican respond to issues getting traction in the media?

Good catch on the date of the photo! I didn't see the caption before because of some browser add-ons I am using. They are supposed to increase security, but often don't display helpful graphics and stuff, which is a nuisance.

Hey, no problem. I've been here a few years. Chances are pretty good I'll be here for a few more.

I appreciate your reply, but sorry to hear that you have to depend on the library for computer access. How frustrating! I hope you get your own connection back soon, so you can participate more easily.

Edit:

Oh, and I forgot....

You can find some photos of him taken this weekend. I won't post any of them because he is squinting badly due to the sun. His face is scrunched up, so I don't know if he is any more recognizable in those photos. But you can find them by using Google Images: Just search for the words:

thanks Dale M. yes, i have been here a few years and i believe you have been here about as long as i have. i will probably be here a few more also. the library has a quiet room and i have my own computer so i can go there and don't have to rely on the library computers and their allotted time fortunately. right now, i am at mcdonald's with my grandson and conveniently still had my laptop in my vehicle, so i thought i would try to connect and it worked! we are in the process of moving and once we are settled we will have internet access again. like the old saying goes, you never miss something until it is gone!!!

Is he albino? NPR says he belongs to Opus Dei and (the horror!) "In accordance with Opus Dei discipline, Burke is celibate and gives most of his income to the movement."

Of course, who better to be Vatican spokesman than a Fox Dei?
