I do not have any problem with those songs after the Mass. We had the recessional and after that they played God Bless America.
Considering that today Italy lost to Spain (0-4) in the European Cup I rather feel more American than Italian.

Sounds like we were at the same parish.

Well praise God for your daughter's recovery! That is a blessing!

Italy played a good game against the best team in the world right now. They have nothing to be ashamed of and I was sorry to see some of the players crying afterward. I know the player who was injured and had to leave the field down one man was really sobbing, probably blaming himself which he should not. Spain are unbeatable, everyone sees how good they are, and I love how clean they play. No fouling, no diving, just good solid football.

"Not CAF Approved", made me chuckle.

She was still a little "out of kilter" when she and son-in-law came to get the girls. Hopefully she got some rest and she will be okay tomorrow.

The readings were great. I'm so glad your daughter is recovering.

In Australia we sing the national anthem as a recessional when one of the two national days (Australia Day, or Anzac Day) fall on a weekday. I don't recall singing it on a Sunday, but I think it's possible.

If I was visiting America and went to Mass on a national day then I would have no problem with the congregation singing a national song for the recessional, in fact I'd be glad to be there with them, but I would feel excluded if it were sung after communion. What am I supposed to be thinking and feeling at this time? Also, might some particularly nationalistic people be angry with me for not joining in? If a patriotic song were sung both after communion and as a recessional I would leave the church feeling that I had only barely been in communion with my fellow congregation.

It's times like this to remember that, just as Sunday Obligation is imposed on travellers, it's also imposed on the particular Churches to make travellers welcome.

During the universal prayers, right after the Creed we pray for our country and elected leaders all the time. With that in mind I have to ask why is it inappropriate to sing an hymn that praises God and ask for his blessings and grace to be upon our country? It is that kind of thinking that lead to prayer being removed from the class rooms of public schools.

Has nothing to do with prayer in schools. I think having a patriotic song (God Bless America is not a hymn!) during the Eucharist is totally inappropriate, period. OK, I might have to give in on the recessional although I still don't like it. But the subjects are completely unrelated to school prayer.

No they are not unrelated as the same kind of thinking is involved. In each you are compartmentalizing it ok to talk about God here but not here or the country here bout not here.

A hymn is a type of song, usually religious, specifically written for the purpose of praise, adoration or prayer, and typically addressed to a deity or deities, or to a prominent figure or personification. The word hymn derives from Greek ὕμνος (hymnos), which means "a song of praise." Collections of hymns are known as hymnals or hymnbooks. God Bless America fit the definition of a Hymn.

There are a lot of things I do not like that does not make them wrong,

We sang Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA at mass today and it was beautiful.

Ok, just kidding.

I love this country and am so fortunate to be living here but I could not agree with the above statement more; behind you all the way on this.
