Default The "I" Word

I was watching a clip form the Oriley Factor, and apparently Moveon.org launched this thing trying to the word Illegal taken out of Illegal Alien. Part of the reason is it takes away the dignity of a person, and that no one is illegal.

Thoughts?

We have a "Resident Alien" status that is legal. Anything else, NOT so legal.....

IMHO this is just more PC garbage so that the secular left can continue their quest.

I have every sympathy for illegal aliens and support Obama's plan to deal with those who came to the US as children. Nonetheless, that doesn't change the fact they are illegal or, if you prefer, came here illegally. Actually, the word "alien"
may be more objectionable since it conjures up the image of an extraterrestrial.

Hi

To be honest I would be more offended by he word "Alien" than illegal... It has a very negative tone to it.

No problem with the term whatsoever. They are aliens who are here illegally, therefore illegal alien. Resident aliens are here legally, etc.

Which is not to say I don't have sympathy for them, I just don't think the solution is to pretend there's not a problem. So long as the law says they shouldn't be here, they're here illegally.

What alot of nonsense! What is less offensive? Criminal tresspasser? Unauthorized immigrant? They broke the law. If you don't want to be called an illegal immigrant, don't immigrate illegally!

Even a neutral term - displaced persons - at some juncture became a derogatory reference.

However, one need to consider that it is the user who twisted the usage and intended the insult - the term itself was not meant to be offensive.

Likewise, political correctness taken to extremes is likely to have odd consequences.

Of course, like many such things, this subject matter was covered in a memorable "Seinfeld" episode.

You mean the episode which used the term "Indian giver" (which, of course, I'm not familiar with) and ended with the Chinese mailman (excuse me, mailperson, not maleperson) who would know the Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood?
Political correctness run amok.

I don't see what's wrong. They came to a foreign country (hence the term alien and/or immigrant) and came illegally.

I do agree with the fact that it's not meant to degrade a person, but it's just got twisted. Saying the word NonLegal doesn't work because saying it is not proper grammar.

I have a lot for sympathy for them to, but not using the word doesn't really change the facts that some person in question is here illegally.

I agree. The people aren't illegal, they've committed an illegal act.

Many people prefer the term "undocumented foreigner."
