Default What do I do when my computer is suddenly very slow and is blocking things and crashing plugins?

It's been very slow for about a month. The plugin is shockwave flash and has been constantly crashing for about a week. I called the tech support for HP, but the computer wouldn't let the guy access my computer. What do I do?

What is the operating system? When was the last time you restarted your computer? Have you updated the plugin?

Running too many instances of Shockwave can cause it to crash. Are you by chance running Chrome?

Run anit-spy ware virus, you can down load it for free, on their site. It is older version but it may help. I Removed a lot of old and non-necessary files. It helped. Do you have a icon from PARETO LOGIC PC HEALTH. They have gotten me a few times. Fortunately it was not too late. They sneak in if you leave your system on, even in sleep mode. Do not comply with it when it requests scan, fix problem etc,

Back up your data and then reset your computer to factory defaults. Only install applications and plugins as you need to use them. It may sound drastic, but it should only take a weekend of your life and you'll have a much smoother computing experience for a while. It's also a good gut check that you have your important data organized and backed up in a way where completely reformatting your computer doesn't put the fear of God into you.

I restarted it today. Yes, I use chrome. I'm not sure what the operating system is. No, I haven't updated the plugin because I can't figure out how.

I will do this if necessary, but that is my last resort and I am hoping to find another way to fix it.

I have been using swagbucks.com. Does anyone know if that could have caused the problem?

Chrome is really bad when it comes to Shockwave. If you have a more than ten tabs running Shockwave, it will sometimes crash because of that. I recommend restarting Chrome every so often because it over-allocates memory (i.e. memory leak); that is, it requests more RAM than your computer has, causing it to slow down.

You can download the latest Shockwave player here: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/.

Swagbucks.com doesn't seem to have any issues with spyware/adware.

I'll second the comment about backing up data; it's never a bad idea to keep copies of irreplaceable data.

OK, I updated it. Ok, maybe I'll just switch to IE then. Thanks for the link!

what about how the computer is so slow? I have high speed internet, but lately it has been running dial-up speed. I deleted a ton of files that I don't need, so I know there is plenty of space on the computer. I ran microsoft security esentials and microsoft safety scanner, and neither of them found anything on it. I downloaded RegInOut software and it found a bunch of corrupt files but it wouldn't fix them without me paying. (I didn't pay, I just deleted it). What do I do about this?

Your computer will slow down if there are too many programs running on it (that is, requested memory exceeds available memory resulting in 'thrashing'). Without knowing details about your computer or operating system (besides it being Windows) I can't really tell you how to fix it other than to run fewer programs (and have fewer tabs open in your browser). Since you indicated that there's plenty of disk space, that can be ruled out.

RegInOut may just be telling you about unused registry entries, so it's not necessarily a major problem (though that can contribute to a slower computer, but not by much).

A few things come to mind:
a) boot your computer into Safe Mode and see if its as sluggish. If it's quicker, then you've something on there in normal mode that's grinding it to a halt.
If that's the case then you need to examine Windows Task Manager to see what's gobbling up your resources.
b) when was last time you defragmented your hard drive? If you download a lot of content your drive may be a tad fragmented.
Let us know how you go on.

It windows 7. How do I tell how many programs are running? And how do I know if it's safe to stop them from running? Now that you mention it, it does seem slower, when I have several tabs open. But it is still slower then normal even when I only have one or 2 open. What are unused registry entries?

I put it on safe mode yesterday, and if anything, it was slower in safe mode, and a bit faster than before that, after I put it back in normal mode.

What does it mean to defragment a hard drive? I deleted a ton of stuff that I downloaded though.
