Council of Trent

What was the purpose of the Council of Trent? Up until now I thought that the Council of Trent was the one that took all of the beliefs and rituals and 'put them together' and created the original doctrines. Am I correct?

My understanding was that Trent was called as a result of the Protestant Reformation. It did cover many issues raised as a result of the "reformation" and standardized a number of practices including the mass.
However I don't' think it would be accurate to say that it "created the original doctrines".

Not really. I think what you have in mind is that Trent remains the best place to go for a systematic, official statement of the doctrinal positions that distinguish Catholics from Protestants, and hence the positions that in a largely Catholic/Protestant society are thought of as distinctively Catholic.

I will be a little stronger than the others. you are ABOSOLUTELY wrong. The Council of Trent did not create any doctrines. I am not for sure which doctrines it may have formally defined that had not been so defined before. The Church does NOT ever create new doctrines.

In general, the Council of Trent served two purposes: it was a belated council of reform, that should have been called at least a century earlier ( there had been popes and others pushing for it much earlier, but politics in Europe were very complicated). Secondly, since it was late, its purpose was also to provide specific answers to Protestant heresies.
