Love, Hate, And Propaganda: Cold War
The last two episodes will be broadcast on CBC TV (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Thursday August 2 and August 9 at 9PM (9PM-10PM) EST.

They talked a little bit about Edward Bernays in Episode 2: 'Turning Up The Heat':
Quote:
Edward Louis Bernays (November 22, 1891 – March 9, 1995) was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations".[1] He combined the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud.
He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the 'herd instinct' that Trotter had described.[citation needed] Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine.[2]

Lots of interesting propaganda techniques explained (many still used by the Modern Media to manipulate their populations' opinions and thoughts), as well as many interesting historical facts I have never heard of before like the 1956 protests in Poland for better working conditions, Louis Armstrong's Jazz Tours in Africa on behalf of the U.S. Goverment, the U.S.S.R. Exhibition in New York in 1959 (which included the Sputnik satellite) and many others in this interesting four hour long history series.

With due respect for the CBC, Edward Bernays did not invent either Public Relations or propaganda. The inventor and developer of bothe was Heinrich Himmler, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda. He was the first to use the mass media of his day, a combination of the press and early radio to enable Adolf Hitler to come to power. This was soon noted in the US and in the Soviet Union who perfected these techniques and used them against each other after WW II.
Ironically, it wasn't propaganda that caused the Soviet Union to collapse. It was the truth, pure and simple.
The Solidarity movement in Poland prooved to Eastern Europe and the people of the Soviet Union the basic falsehood that Communism was a political movement for the workers. The second lie that was exposed was the military invincibility of the Soviet Union.
The USSR recieved almost all of its Foreign Exchange funds through the sale of weapons to Third World countries. The First Iraq War prooved that Soviet arms and weapons systems were inferior to anything the US had. As a result in the aftermath, you couldn't give away a Soviet tank or weapons system, and those who owed for such things stopped payment to the Soviets. The result was the bankruptcy and collapse of the Soviet system.
A lie is a lie, and no matter how much spin you put on it, the truth will eventually come out. Chickens really do come home to roost!

You are correct! It was Josef Goebbels who was the first to use the Mass Media for propaganda and as a political weapon.
That is what I get for posting so late at night!
All of you please accept my most sincere apologies.
