Who is "the great prostitute, who rules over many waters" from Revelation?
I looked it up online and so many negative anti-catholic people say it is the Roman Catholic church, and I don't understand why? I am also curious as to who actually is "the great prostitute".
Revelation 17:1, 2

I was having serious problems with viewing modern Rome as the "Whore of Babylon" (a phrase not found in the Bible) long before I swam out of evangelical Protestantism.

Pagan Rome is absolutely a possibillity, and today it can refer to almost any of the great nations of the world.
US, EU, China, Russia, any of them will quallify for this title.

Revelation 18:23, 24 says "The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world's great men. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray. In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth."

"Many Biblical scholars believe that "Babylon" is an allegory of the pagan Roman Empire at the time it persecuted Christians."
"Some traditionalist Catholics who hold the position of Sedevacantism, most notably the Most Holy Family Monastery, believe that a counterfeit bride – a Counter-Catholic Church – will arise in the end times in order to deceive faithful Catholics."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whore_of_Babylon
It must be the a wealthy organization:
How terrible, how terrible for that great city! She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens, decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!
http://bible.cc/revelation/18-16.htm
In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!' "Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.
http://bible.cc/revelation/18-17.htm
And this woman you saw in your vision represents the great city that rules over the kings of the world."

i agree with the first.
the second is a possibility i guess.
but i'd still rather take my chances with Rome than with the Sedevacantists.
"and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Jesus about his church.

Yup, Roman Empire. If the world were to end todayish, the clearest correlary in modern times is an outfit called the United States of America. Yikes.
Smart catholics don't try to turn prophecy into predictions though. Prophecy isn't fortune telling, it is TRUTH telling. There's a difference that many evangelicals don't recognize.

Prophecy more 'fourth' telling rather then 'forthune' telling.

Jerusalem is also built on seven hills, and has also been accused of of sleeping with the kings of many nations, meaning unfaithful to God, which the OT as tons of stories about that.
The point is any city, nation, empire, institution, or organization can become this whore. It could never the the true Church because she is protected by the Holy Spirit. Even if a false catholic church arose it would be just that, a false church.

Regarding the 7 hills:
I think the only scriptural reference used by some non-Catholics to specifically identify the Catholic Church as the harlot/woman is: Rev.17:9 This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; Now, the Catholic Church resides in the state of Vatican City. It is a separate, independent state. It sits on a low hill (note the singular). There are not 7 hills in the state of Vatican City.
Sometimes I think the 7 hills refer to the 7 continents of our earth.
