Dreams and other things troubling me
I've had a few dreams in the past involving something, either a demon or the devil, trying to force me to sign a contract to give them my soul.
One involved me in a dark room, held down into an old wooden chair by some force, and having an old parchment and a quill pen with blood in front of me as my arm seemed to move by itself. I strained so hard to hold it back, but it moved on its own. Right before the pen struck the paper, there was a huge boom that was still echoing when I woke up. It literally shook my house. We live out in the country, and when I looked outside, the sky was clear. My first thought was thunder.
This happened again, another dream where I was being forced to give up my soul, and again the huge boom woke me up. The dreams were years apart.
I had another dream, something was trying to take my soul, but this time I heard what sounded like a huge bird flapping its wings. When I woke up, I saw a huge shadow on my ceiling in the shape of two big wings. I stared at it some time before it faded. I felt safe for some reason so I went back to sleep.
Last night I was being chased by something, some force that wanted to take me over. I woke up, or so I thought. As I sat up in bed, I felt the force there, trying to get into me again, so I started praying. I woke up again for real this time. I was very tired and soon went back to sleep. The dream started back where it left off, I kept waking up many times before really waking up. I had been under anesthesia on Monday so I tried to just convince myself it was due to that, but for the other dreams I had not.
Any other dreams I have had over the years similiar to these have ended with that boom that always shakes the house. It's like a huge hand slapped my home. It's never happened with any other dreams, and I've never experienced it when I was awake.
The thing that makes me post this is something I saw on television. It was a show about the real story behind the exorcist movie, I think on the discovery channel. I saw it some time ago, but keep going back to this one part of it. I hadn't had a dream that woke me up with the boom in some time before this show.
In the show, they discuss how they had taken the boy somewhere. I think it was a hospital of some sort, and were continuing the exorcism there. Later, they described that as the boy was finally freed of the possession there was a huge boom that shook the building, but nothing was damaged.
I never really thought about it until the other day, and to be honest, it kind of bothers me now. What they describe hearing, and that boom that felt like it would blow the house apart waking me up sound so similar.
It seems sometimes that I also seem to know or have this feeling that something will happen, and then it does. It is kind of a weird feeling. I may say, "Blah blah will happen" and suddenly it will. I don't know where I get the idea from.
Can things try to hurt you through dreams or am I just nuts?

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I wouldn't place too much significance on dreams, but if they are troubling you (which it sounds as though they are) I would just use it as a moment to pray or as a reminder to pray.
That's what we do, here. I'm sure unseen things can/do influence. Unfortunately, we don't have any way of knowing when it's the devil and when it's just a problem of watching a scary show and having eaten bad pastrami. The good thing is, we know we have an angel to look out for us, plus the Holy Trinity, Mary, and the saints on our side--this helps me sleep easier.
To me, the best course of action is to pray, go to mass often, attend adoration, and the rest. But, definitely pray and keep praying. I feel more peaceful when I do and I know it helps my kids a lot, too. When I'm awakened or troubled in the middle of the night, I just pray.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I see your a Baptist, but please consider getting a blessed Rosary to sleep with it's a real comfort object! When I ever have bad dreams I immediatly try to pray a Rosary, and then the dreams stop. Sounds scary though as I have had similar experiences. I will pray a Rosary for your intentions. May I suggest a Eucharistic Adoration?

I think you should find some constructive to do besides watching scary movies. Personally, I seldom watch a movie since any movie can influence you in unforseen ways. And I never watch T.V. How is your spiritual life? Perhaps you need to talk to a priest.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I don't watch many scary movies. I watched this show way after I had the dreams. Sorry if I gave the impression that I watch a lot of scary films.
I spend my free time usually taking care of homeless animals or working on restoring my 1966 Impala. I rarely watch much tv.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I think you should take your concerns to your parish priest or to another confessor that you trust. Even the saints had spiritual directors so that they could test the fruits of the spirit. To me it does sound as if your dreams could have a demonic influence. Are you in a state of sin and could God be warning you? Or are you in a state of Grace, pursuing holiness, and the devil is unhappy with this? Both of these things are possible. I have had some experiences with seeing tarantulas or swirling black particles upon waking up, along with a sense of overwhelming dread or fear. I haven't talked to my confessor about them, but I personally feel they happened b/c I was/am trying to get closer to God and praying for the souls of others. These things never happened until a year ago when I had a reversion. I use Holy Water before I go to bed and pray the St. Michael prayer. As a general rule, we shouldn't put too much stock in dreams and we must be careful not to see them as "prophecies"--this is forbidden.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
Nightmares can be caused by physical ailments/disorders. If they persist you may want to talk to your health care provider. Some people suffer from such nightmares because of sleep disorders which can be caused by several things, so it's not always a spiritual problem or a mental or emotional problem but a physical imbalance of some sort. Your doctor might be able to help you more than us. God bless you.

I want to get a rosary, but I don't have any Catholic churches near me to get it blessed at.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I've been looking online at some blessed rosaries. I was wondering, how do I know if I am buying one that is has really been blessed. Is there a reputable place to purchase from? I see amazon.com has many for sale, I just do not know if the people are being honest about the blessing.
The best thing to do would be to buy the rosary unblessed and then find a priest to bless it for you--that way you can be sure it's blessed and who is blessing it. In my parish's gift shop, if I buy an item I want blessed I leave it there for the priest to bless at his convenience and then I pick it up later. Or you could catch a priest before or after Mass even if you don't attend the Mass. Most would be thrilled to bless a rosary, even if your'e not a member of the parish. You can usually get blessed Holy Water, however, from a church. They either keep it in a big container with a spout or they might have a big baptismal font where you could dip a clean container in. Then you can sprinkle it around your bedroom and use some on yourself.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I did some searching online, managed to find some in a 30 to 50 mile radius, nothing any closer. I think I will go there probably next weekend, this will give me time to order a rosary and have it shipped. Who knows, maybe I'll make some friends there too.

If you can rule out such things as sinful addictions, the occult, spiritism, Freemasonry and the like in your life, or your immediate ancestry, then should probably not take your dreams too seriously. If you are considering a conversion to the Catholic Church, the enemy of your soul may be attempting to attack you in your dreams.
The medal, or cross of St. Benedict is also a good source of spiritual protection, as a reminder of the One whom you serve, and the one you do not serve. This website will explain:

May God's peace be with you

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
There are several factors you need to look into before jumping to any haste conclusions. Trust me, I've seen horror films in my time and whenever something minutely similar would happen as did in the film or documentary I would automatically think, "Oh gosh, I'm possessed!" You can only be possessed by a demon, or demons, if you willingly and coherently gain pleasure in anything satanic or adhere to any type of satanic ritual ( Ouija boards, reading palms, wiccan rituals, etc.) Now there are instances where a house or object can become possessed; but, from what you described, it doesn't sound anything like that.
There are many sleep disorders out there that can be horrifying to the point you become paranoid. There are things called false awakenings (vivid dreams, dream within dreams) and sleep paralysis that involve forms of nightmares. I've experienced sleep paralysis in which you have no control of your body. It's as if some demonic force has taken over you and sits on top of your chest. In the process, you hallucinate because your mind literally wakes up before your body. When you're in a deep sleep, your muscles should be immobilized. So if your muscles are still asleep and your mind is awake, you won't have control of what your body does and your brain will create hallucinations, yet the dream will feel realistic. When I experienced it, I heard multiple, terrifying voices and saw multiple demons. That could explain the loud noise you heard when waking up. Believe it or not, it could be just physiological.
Now if you're a nervous person and you constantly think about these things, you will have dreams related to whatever image you subconsciously capture throughout the day. Our dreams are a way of expressing fears, anger, and desires we normally can't in our waking mind.
Now looking at the spiritual realm. Do you typically engage in any satanic activity? If you don't, and I don't think you do for you wouldn't be concerned, but if you don't,remember evil spirits want you to be afraid of living or sleeping. They will try to make you afraid of completing minute tasks in any which way you can. They will make you miserable and afraid of life at the cost of dreams. You don't want to live in fear because that's what they want. Keep in mind this is just looking at the spiritual realm.
Narrow down all physiological and spiritual factors. If you have any questions, you can message me. Trust me, I've experienced who knows how many dreams that scared the life out of me. And if it makes it feel more comforting, speak to a priest.

Re: Dreams and other things troubling me
I think the worst activity I engage in maybe the odd bit of road rage or a swear word here and there. I don't drink alcohol (had to babysit to many people for that to appeal to me), don't smoke (never tried any tobacco), have never used drugs at all.
I'm not really a nervous person to the point of being paranoid about stuff like people or things are out to get me.
I do over analyze things a bit, worry about trying big things that I have always wanted (starting a animal rescue organization).
I don't mess with anything occult, heard way to many things about Ouija boards and the like to even entertain that notion.

If you don't engage in anything too serious, look into the physiological aspect of it. You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping and you wouldn't want it being spent in nightmares. It could be a sleep disorder but from what you described it sounds like a mild form of sleep paralysis. It's normal but it should only be normal if you experience it 1 to 2 times a year. Anything above that, you might have a sleep disorder. Exhaust those factors first, if you rule sleep disorders out, then speak to a priest.
