Are there any Catholic Preppers here?
Anyone who is interested in emergency preparedness?

Catholic, no.
Prepper, yes.
Great thread, especially with National Preparedness Month (in the USA) starting September 1! But it's OK to start early!

I didn't know this until you got me curious & I tried the CAF "search" function...there's a social group and separate CAF forum board for preppers, if you're interested. I'll probably see you there!

Re: Catholic Preppers
Ah hello there. I got pretty excited when I saw this thread. I am also a catholic and a prepper. Well not a hardcore one at the time but I am slowly working on it with my budget. A few times here and there I will purchase a few iodine tablets. I feel as if though I shouldn't be preparing considering my faith in God but I guess he put all these survival gear on earth do I can live to see a couple of years. Well contact me sometime. Happy prepping!

Re: Catholic Preppers
Not much of a prepper, but try my best to be prepared. My wife works case's for FEMA and the horror story's of those not prepared are chilling. Living in the woods, we have to be prepared always to some degree. I can hunt and gather our property for a while to get by when needed, but need a handpump for our well when off the grid. Their is a spring nearby, but you would be surprised how much water is used to stay comfortable. Tim

The Bible suggests that God is a big fan of preparedness...from Genesis, we have Noah (hey, it wasn't raining when he started building that boat!) and Joseph (he had to plan for seven YEARS of famine, for all of Egypt!). In Proverbs, we find all sorts of verses about working hard vs. letting gardens fill with weeds!
Just try to do one little thing each day. When you go to the grocery store, buy one extra can of vegetables, or tuna, or crackers...and set it aside in a box where it won't be touched until needed. If you finish a 2L bottle of soda, rinse it out & refill with tap water, and store that. (We were without water for weeks a few years ago, what a hassle. You never know when you're going to need it, so keep saving those pop bottles.) One day each month, test your smoke detectors. Visit your town's emergency coordinator & find out about hazards in your area, ask about evacuation routes, etc. One day make a list of all your accounts, contacts & important documents & start putting together an emergency binder. There are hundreds of things you can do to prepare that don't require $. Stuff a couple dollars in an envelope each week, as your cash emergency fund. Take it in small steps, just do something every day!

I'm not even going to attempt to ever compare myself with one of God's prophets...I'm pretty certain Noah and Joseph both had quite a different interaction and set of guidelines from God that go beyond admonitions for preparedness and watchfulness. Throughout Scripture, as well as Holy Tradition, we find admonitions to be watchful, vigilant, prepared, etc. Which of these situations is speaking of government takeover, or end-of-the-world catastrophic mayhem? What is the preparedness for? Judgement.

It is only in this life that we may prepare to face Christ at our resurrection. All it takes is one good read of the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 12, particularly through the lens of Holy Tradition with the Commentaries of the Fathers. This chapter speaks pages of Wisdom to preparedness, coveting, and almsgiving.
Perhaps where we should look for answers is in the understanding of Revelation, Chapter 13, and what the Fathers have taught us on the subject over the years. This is a very specific study that is much more fitting to 'Preppers' than discussions of general asceticism (which is more about offloading, rather than hoarding).
What does St Andrew of Caesarea say regarding this chapter, and perhaps our preparedness? How about Holy Fathers such as Geronta Paisios of Blessed Memory? Or St Ephraim the Syrian? All have spoken of this time, and all have spoken with pastoral enlightenment.

Re: Catholic Preppers
While I wouldn't consider myself a true prepper or anyone preparing for the atomic dinosaurs, zombie kittens, or post apocalyptic revolution... It's very prudent to have a well stocked medical kit, several 5 gallon jugs of water, and at least a few weeks of dry or canned goods for food. Along with candles, ammo, etc.
We live in the mountains though, about every decade or so this area seems to be locked down due to weather for a few weeks. When somethings predictable, it's essential to prepare for it.
