World Youth Day 2008
Pope Bennedict XVI:
"I am pleased to announce that the next World Youth Day in 2008 will be held in Sydney, Australia!!!!!!!!!"
WOOOoOooOooOoO! Sydney-siders are CELEBRATING!! This is fantabulous! (although it was rumoured, it is not official til it comes from the Pope's mouth!) How awesome!!!

Re: World Youth Day 2008
I knew it.
Don't ask me how, I don't know.
But a few days my family and I were discussing where the next one would be, and I just had a feeling it would be Sydney...and I said so...so now everyone is really freaked out.
It just seemed right. It hadn't been in Australia yet, Sydney's hosted the olympics, and its a relatively safe place...I just thought "It's gotta be Sydney"...it just seemed logistically right...
And I was right. I was actually rather amazed to find out.

What are the other host cities? Where is it being held next year? I hope when my kids are old enough, we can take them to one.

They don't have WYD every year. 2008 will be the next one.

At our church, the young adult bible study is 18-35 years old. I am counting 35 as still young enough...but you can go when your older as a chaperone!

Re: World Youth Day 2008
I'll definitely be there. There was an AP article this morning that said Sydney only expects 250,000...a far cry from the 800,000 pilgrim youth (and 1,000,000 total at the mass today)! Why is that? Is the distance so far that not many people will go down there? Let's do everything we can go get that city PACKED in 2008. I'm starting now. As Pope Benedict stated the next World Youth Day would take place in 2008. So the event similar to the one in Germany will take place in three years. But every year on Palm Sunday, a World Youth Day is to take place on the local level (diocesean level)

I think there will be as many if not more than Cologne WYD. Considering that the largest WYD by a large margin was in Manila.

Re: World Youth Day 2008
I'd like to be there. My wife and I will drive up there and try to stay somewhere out of Sydney. I have no idea where they will fit a million people, if that is a potential attendance. But it would be good to see.
Australia's a fairly anti-Catholic nation so you'll all have to make sure you come and visit, otherwise the smallish number of Catholics here won't be able to make it a huge event.

Re: World Youth Day 2008
My husband and I were talking about WYD today and he said what did I think the chances were of it ever being held in Utah. I said I think it would be wonderful because it would give the Catholic youth of Utah a chance to speak to other Catholics who aren't hindered by a dominant religion which thinks our religion is apostasy. I also think the Catholic youth of Utah would be a great example to others.
