I am a girl scout mom and I have a fun game! Have each child crumple two pieces of paper into two balls. Then split the class in half . If you have a couple of those white dry-erase boards on wheels, use them as a barrior (like a volley ball net.) If not, you can use a line on the floor to divide them. Set a timer for 30 seconds and the kids can throw their balls over. Whoever has the least amount of balls on their side WINS. The dry -erase boards are good because it gives the kids less opprtunity to cheat (they can't see past it and throw things over too easily after the timer goes off). Be sure to count down the last 5 seconds.

Have a stack of post a notes with names of people from the Bible on each one. Stick one on the back of each child so they can't see it. Then they go around to each other asking for a clue as to who they are, and try to guess the name of the person they are wearing. A variation on this is they have to do a 20 questions type thing where they ask other people a yes/no question to try to figure out the name on their back.

Play hangman using words from the Bible. The kids get pretty competetive about calling out letters and trying to guess.

I teach 5th grade CCD

My class LOVED Bible Hangman. We were using Faith First, and it has many activities in the teachers guide, but, it is a bit, well - fluffy. This year, I do not know if we will have time for games, we are moving to Faith and Life - and it will be time for some deep study.

BTW - What cirriculum are you using?

Maybe this isn't for 5th graders, but I have this "session" with my class...

Activity: Who can give the best explanation of the Trinity?
Why do this: Because it will make the realize that they need to listen to you
Pros: The question makes them think
Cons: Lower self-esteem

I did this with my CCD class last year, but then again, I teach 8th graders....
